Walking Through Ephesians

For the past 5 years I have been going through the book of Ephesians. The first time was at Bournemouth and I really went through quite quickly.

The second time was with Faith Baptist Church, Glengormley, This time was very detailed up until now and because of my soon departure the last 1 and a half chapters will have to be quite hurried.

This evening I posted a summary of my notes on chapter 5, verse 20 on my personal website, www.thewickens.info. It is the 50th message in the series. I enjoyed the lessons I learned and wanted to publish them on my site. Then it struck me that it would be a good discipline for me to do this on a regular basis.

Now I intend on going back to the first message and over the next few months I will begin at the beginning and go through each verse.

Hopefully it will be of help to someone both doctrinally and devotionally.  Feel free to leave comments and criticisms.

As I have already mentioned I will soon be leaving Faith Baptist Church. Tomorrow I will post more about what is happening and the exciting times that are ahead for the church.

The Next Two Months

A couple of weeks ago we finished several series at Faith that we had been running for a while. In the mornings we have been considering our walk with God and we had four messages on walking in the Word and four messages on walking in prayer. If we get our prayer life and Bible reading right then most of the problems we face will be easily overcome.

In the evenings we have had 10 messages on resurrections in the Bible. We considered first of all the absolute certainty that every person will one day be raised; some to judgment and others to reward. Then we studied each of the passages in the Old and New Testaments that spoke of individuals being raised from the dead. Most of these messages are available to download from the church website or from a previous posting here.

Beginning Sunday, 7th of September we will take a bird’s eye view of I Corinthians. Each message will consider one of the major issues Paul confronted at the Corinthian church. I am planning on 8 weeks for this over view.

Also on Sunday 7th, in the evening, we will begin a 4 week study on Heaven. I may extend this to 6 weeks but I will see how the Lord leads. Then for the final 2 weeks in October we will take a very current issue and look at it from a Biblical perspective. We did this last year and studied what God has to say about anger, addictions and (bio-ethics).

Before all that kicks off though, we have a prophecy Sunday (tomorrow). In the morning we wil consider the vital importance of prophecy. In the morning we will take a very high level look at the Millennial Kingdom, we will be spending a 1000 years doing something and I think we can find out a lot right now.

Next Sunday my own pastor, Tom Dotson, will be coming over from England to preach for us. I cannot tell you how excited I am about this visit!

Plan on being at every service and do not forget our ongoing verse-by-verse study of Ephesians at our midweek Bible study and prayer meeting.

Sermons or “Advice Talks with a Religious Twist”?

Over at this blog I read a comment that really struck me and I think it ties in with some thoughts I have been considering lately. It seems that the Reformed theology is having resurgence. While I appreciate their focus on the glory of God and His Sovereignty I disagree strongly with Calvinism and their eschatology. So while I see some strength in their position I wonder what exactly is attracting or driving so many believers to them.

This is the comment that caught my attention today and I believe is relevant to my current questions:

“Our pastor doesn’t proclaim to us what the Bible says and means. The messages are not revelations of the glory of Christ. They are advice-talks with a religious twist.”

The key issue revolves around the lack of sound, Christ-centred Bible preaching. In particular it seems to come down to the inherent weakness of “advice talks with a religious twist”.

Instead of concrete messages, working through the Scriptures in a systematic and thorough way I see a lot of imbalance, inconsistency and “seeker” sensitiveness.

In my own preaching I am working toward a different model of preaching than I have been using over the past year or so. Instead of most of the time being spent on topical and current event type messages I am focusing on verse-by-verse series and book overviews.

I will still preach topical messages and current event messages, but they will be the exception rather than the rule.

To be honest this is something I have tried to do in the past year, but I have not quite got it right yet. I do believe I am moving in the right direction.

Something I think about a lot is whether I preach standards or principles. While both are necessary I believe teaching the principles are the most important. If I focus on the standards then people may toe the line but never really know or accept why. As soon as the opportunity then comes they reject the standard. If, however, the focus is on the principle then that enables sincere and faithful believers to apply them to varying circumstances and consequently attain the correct standard.

Anyway, those were just some thoughts on preaching I wanted to share.

Getting Back the Passion

A couple of days ago I wrote an article concerning the lack of passion many seem to have for the Lord, a lack which many at some point experience.

A quick and accurate answer on how to get our passion back can be found in In I Samuel 7:3 the prophet Samuel commands the people of Israel,

If ye do return unto the LORD with all your hearts, then put away the strange gods and Ashtaroth from among you, and prepare your hearts unto the LORD, and serve him only…

Three clear steps are observable with one outcome: (1) Put away the strange Gods, (2) Prepare your hearts to serve the Lord and (3) Serve God only. The outcome will be that we will return to the Lord with all our hearts,  God will be your passion.

What are the practical steps towards implementing such a course in our lives?

1. Put Away the Strange Gods – Get Rid of the Distractions

If something used to be your focus but no longer holds that place then in essence something has distracted you. It may be that you are in some state of depression or physical, mental, emotional or spiritual exhaustion so that there is essentially just a blur rather than any particular focus. Chances are, though, that instead of focusing on God you are focused on something or someone else.

My aim here is to deal with the changed focus rather than the absence of any focus. To regain the passion for God you must figure out what has taken pride of place, what is now the focus of your life.

  • What consumes your thoughts?
  • What do you do with your spare time?
  • What are your goals and aspirations?
  • What are your motivations?
  • As well consider what habitual, known sin in your life is keeping you from God.

2. Prepare Your Hearts to Serve the Lord – Get in the Presence of God

The word for prepare has many implications. The Hebrew carries the understanding of standing, figuratively and literally. It would not be out of place to infer a central tenant of repentance, of turning from sin and turning to God.

  • When we prepare our hearts to serve the Lord we are turning from sin to God.
  • When we prepare our hearts to serve God we are standing with clean hands and a pure heart in His presence (Psalm 24)
  • When we prepare our hearts to serve God we are in God’s presence, spending time with Him

We prepare ours to serve the Lord by spending time in the Word and in prayer. This is the key to regaining our passion – read the Scriptures and pray. Let the fire of God’s Word thaw your cold heart; let the Fire of the Word rekindle the flame of desire in your heart to serve the True and Living God; let the fire of the Word spread God’s love through you to a lost and dying world.

3 . Serve God Only

Once we have turned from our sin and refocused our heats and minds on God then we must get on with the business of serving Him.

It is not enough to get right with God we must, by His grace, stay right with Him. We can make sure this happens by staying in the Word and by actively serving God with our lives.


The application to the Scripture above gives the broad headings of what needs to happen. Briefly I want to share further steps to help in regaining the passion:

  • See God for the great God that He is
  • Compare the temporary works of sin with the eternal fruit of righteousness
  • Consider the greatest joy for yourself and those around you comes only when God is first in your life
  • Understand the plight of the sinner plunging into Hell for a Christ-less eternity

It ultimately comes back to getting our eyes off of sin and self and back onto God and those around us.

Much more could probably be said and perhaps what has been shared could have been better written. However, I feel this is a topic I will be returning to in the coming weeks.

Abortion – THe Hidden Holocaust Part 7

I. The Slippery Slope

a. Small Steps to Big Changes

Just a few decades ago some of the medical reasons given today for having an abortion would have been unthinkable and entirely unacceptable. Yet by many small steps we have come to the place where children are being murdered for the most minor of reasons. And at the end of the day, there is no good reason to kill a child.

One study concluded that “Of all eugenic abortions prescribed on the basis of genetic history, one-half to three-quarters of the unborn children destroyed are not affected by the disease. More “normal” children are killed than ‘handicapped’ children.” (Pro-life Answers for Pro-choice Questions, page 223)

Some argue that if a child is going to be born with a debilitating illness, deformity or disease then an abortion should take place. Some suggest it while others strongly recommend it.

But the argument that began by dealing with severe cases has taken us a step at a time to the place where we have the phrase “designer babies” becoming main stream.

There are abortions taking place today on children on the medical basis that they are found to have Down syndrome, missing limbs, an extra finger or cleft palate.

The mother of a five year old girl wrote into the London Times in 1990 with this comment:

“I was horrified to read that many couples now opt for abortion rather than risk having a baby with such a minor physical imperfection. My daughter is not some subnormal freak… she can, and does, lead a happy and fulfilled life… What sort of society do we live in when a minor facial deformity, correctable by surgery, is viewed as so abnormal as to merit abortion?”

Many unborn children diagnosed with Down syndrome never have the opportunity to enjoy life. To many in today’s society they do not deserve to live.

There is a recorded case in 1982 when a baby was born with a minor defect that would not allow food to pass into his stomach. This condition could have been easily fixed by surgery. However, because he had Down syndrome the doctor and parents agreed to allow him to starve to death. The public become aware of the situation and many families came forward offering to adopt him. But for some reason the parents preferred that their baby die.

That may sounds outrageous but a survey in the US revealed that two out of three doctors would go along with parent’s wishes to deny life saving surgery to a child with Down syndrome. Nearly three out of four said that if they had a Down syndrome child, they would choose to let him starve to death.

This reason is just one of many given for allowing babies to be killed or to die.

But the slippery slope begins with small steps and each small step leads to the horrors that we see today.

There is an historical precedent set by Hitler. No doubt killing Jewish people on the basis of their nationality would have at one point been abhorrent to the vast majority of those involved. But first Hitler killed 275,000 handicapped people.

What was once abhorrent became acceptable and before the nation knew what was happening 6 million Jews had been murdered.

Holocaust scholar Raul Hilberg argues that the key to the widespread destruction of the Jewish people was the use of degrading terminology such as “useless eaters” and “garbage” which blinded society to the fact the real people were being killed.

One pro-choice advocate referred to pregnancy as a venereal disease and abortion as the cure. Others have referred to unborn babies as debris, garbage, and refuse to justify abortion.

Once the person has been dehumanised then we can take any action against them we like with minimal repercussions.

The Risks of Abortion

Over at the Times Online Melanie McDonagh has an interesting article titled, “Abortion Has Risks, Whatever the Research Says”. Here is a brief paragraph,

My chief objection to abortion isn’t the damage that it might cause the woman concerned; I mind that it kills the foetus. But if we are to take seriously the question of whether abortion may have problematic consequences, then we have to acknowledge that most of the research on mental health has not been conclusive.

While we are on this topic. I saw several examples over the weekend of the hypocrisy of many in the news media. When it comes to discussing crime, if a pregnent lady is murdered or hurt and loses her baby then they talk about two victims and they do not say foetus, but baby, child or some other endearing term.

If, however, they are talking about abortion and pro-choice then they will de-humanise the unborn child by calling it a foetus or embryo and they do not care about the loss of life, only the so-called choice and rights of the mother.

I would encourage you to listen to the news and spot these inconsistencies.

The danger we see here is that the value of a life is determined by whether or not the child is wanted. If they want the child, then it is a baby, a life and an individual should be condemned for taking the life of the unborn child. If the baby is not wanted then it is merely an embryo, a foetus and the government paid doctors can end that life with no question of morality or ethics.

A True Moving of the Holy Spirit

Over at the Pulpit Magazine John MacArthur has just started a new series on identifying a true work of the Holy Spirit: Part One is here . I believe it ties in well with the current conversation concerning Todd Bentley.

He begins by referring to Jonathan Edwards who listed five results of a true movement of the Holy Spirit from I John 4:

In short, a true work of the Holy Spirit:

  1. Exalts the true Christ,
  2. Opposes Satan’s interests,
  3. Points people to the Scriptures,
  4. Elevates truth, and
  5. Results in love for God and others.

I would encourage you to go over and read the whole article. I would encourage you to read it in light of the many so-called revivals we see and hear about; the most current fraud being that of Todd Bentley at the Lakeland Revival.

8 Errors of Todd Bentley – Part 2

My apologies for the delay in this second part coming. In the end it has become more of an introduction to the issues and not as in-depth as I would have hoped. Anyway, I hope this material combined with the links at the end will give you a spring board to begin your own studies. The key thing is to compare everything with Scripture. If it does not meet Scriptural principles and requirements, then it is not of God.

The more I find out about this man and his mentors the more disturbing this whole thing seems. Further details on problems with Todd Bentley can be found here, Moriel Ministries. If you visit that site you will realise that the critics there do not believe that sign gifts ceased after the apostolic era. However, even they can see problems with the Lakeland meetings.

01 Deafening Worship, Dancing, Jumping and the Smell of Smoke

This objection really focuses on the aspect of worship. The New Testament instruction for worship includes several instructions in various places. Two of the most important are that true worship is carried out in spirit and in truth and also that things must be done decently and in order. (John 4:23 and I Corinthians 14:40)

Other Scriptural principles that teach the primacy of the Word, not of the music, need to be considered. The apostle Paul spoke of the preaching of the Word having the power, not a music performance. (I Corinthians 1:18 & 21) Balance must always be sought in the combination of music and preaching and teaching in church meetings.

Reports of people dancing, jumping and collapsing are not found in Scripture and are an extra-Biblical addition. Reports of some of the dancing in at least one meeting are not safe for a family-friendly blog. But some truly disturbing accounts are out there.

Lastly, the smell of smoke? A BBQ smell that made them hungry for God? The lack of Scriptural precedent for such a thing makes me uncomfortable. What is it’s purpose? Little can be said about this but it is just one of many aspects of these meetings that seem very unusual.

In every church we must make sure that people are not driven to an emotional and pseudo-spiritual peak by the power of the music instead of a genuine move by the Spirit of God.

02 Todd Bentley Bringing the Kingdom of God?

I do not know of any definition of the Kingdom of God and its inauguration that would allow this comment to align with the Word of God. Speaking from a purely dispensational-premillennial viewpoint the errors here are too numerous to detail. Daniel states that Jesus Christ will found the Kingdom of God on earth, He will be the focal point. (Daniel 2:34)

Revelation 19 indicates a pre-millennial return following the seven years of tribulation. If the Kingdom has now come why do we not see the Lamb lying down with the lion, or why do we not see Christ ruling with a rod of iron? Plainly, the Kingdom is not yet here.

03 Visiting Heaven and Receiving a Crown?

Crowns are the rewards of Christians that will be awarded after death and will be placed at the feet of Jesus. When you get your crown you do not get to come back to earth and talk about it. (James 1:12, II Timothy 4:8, I Corinthians 9:25 & Revelation 4:10)

04 Touch the Screen Now For Healing?

I touched my screen and just got a static shock. But seriously, while it may have happened on occasion that objects the apostles had touched had healing qualities and sometimes just their presence brought about healing those were rare. They were spontaneous, not organised and built up.

Finally, I believe I Corinthians 13, other passages and historical records show the cessation of apostolic miracles.

05 Chanting

It has been well documented that chanting builds up a kind of altered mental state. Any service that relies upon using techniques such as this to control crowds, and that is exactly what happens, is clearly not Biblical. We worship with our whole being and these semi-hypnotic states clearly by-pass that principle.

God desires us, our mind, body and spirit. Chanting by-passes the mind and minimises the spirit. We could perhaps compare this with the vain repitition Jesus spoke of in Matthew 6.

06 The Lord Himself Appeared to Todd?

Working from the Biblical principles and patterns we have no reason to believe in visible manifestations of the Lord. Apart from Paul the apostle this is an entirely unknown occurrence. Even in the book of Acts when people sincerely sought the Lord, Jesus Himself did not appear. Instead apostles were sent to them or they were sent to the apostles.

07 Todd Bentley on Angel Ministries

Here we see more practices that are more familiar in occultism than Christianity. Out of body experiences do not measure up with Paul’s words that to be out of the body is to be present with the Lord. The interaction of angels with these individuals is something again which is completely alien to Biblical examples.

08 Preach Angels, Not Jesus

Paul determined to know nothing among the people to whom he ministered save Jesus Christ. In all things Jesus should have the pre-eminence. (I Corinthians 2:2) The general answer they give to the above examples is that just because something is not in the Bible does not make it wrong. To such an argument there is little that can be said. It seems the first issue to deal with is the authority of Scripture. Once that has happened only then can we progress to deal with other matters in detail.

This may seem too superficial to some but I hope it will help you in your discernment regarding this movement in Florida.

8 Errors of Todd Bentley and the Lakeland Revival

Though Scripture seems to be minimized in many of these experience based meetings I want to take a look at some Scriptural issues with Todd Bentley and the Lakeland Revivals.

The so-called “Lakeland Revival” continues to thrive and if anything has increased in popularity and influence. Reports of individuals traveling from all over the USA and from different countries around the world demonstrate the spread of this movement.

When compared with Scripture the Lakeland meetings just do not meet the grade. Do not misunderstand, I would love to know that sick babies were being healed and that people were growing back limbs and being raised from the dead, but the Bible and not experience is the measure of the Christian life.

Due to the potential size of this article I want to do it in two parts. First I will share some quotes, fully referenced, that do not match up to Scripture. Then in my next post we will get into the Word to see what God says on these matters.

Here are a few quotes that bother me,

01 Deafening Worship, Dancing, Jumping and the Smell of Smoke

The worship was DEAFENING…  The sound from the people was LOUDER than the P.A. system…  everyone was dancing or jumping!!!

The Glory came on Todd and the ushers helped him on the stage.  Minutes later, he fell out under the power!!!

A few minutes later he stood up, and YOU COULD SMELL SMOKE IN THE ROOM!!

The churches building supervisor ran through the back stage…  then went outside all the way around the building…  he could only smell the smoke on the stage & back stage & just outside the stage door entrance.  When he walked 30 feet from the door, the smell was gone.

It literally smelled like a sweet barbeque!!  IT MADE US HUNGRY FOR GOD!!!

The worship leader, Roy, cried out…  THE GLORY IS HERE!!!  He whirled around several times…  the fire hit his feet…  and he jumped into the air and fell flat on his face!!!

02 Todd Bentley Bringing the Kingdom of God?

Then I saw the Lord turning you into a human nail, you know, like a spike nail. I saw the hand of God, I saw the Father hit this hammer & it hit you & it went straight into the ground of Florida.

I saw a scroll attached to this nail & it said the Kingdom of God has now come.

03 Visiting Heaven and Recieving a Crown?

All kinds of spirits of death, infirmity and depression are cast out. This is on-going, day after day, just as Lakeland. It fell here! A cesarean scar disappeared from a patient. Another patient was lifted up and visited rooms in heaven and received a crown. All this and more is happening at the doctor’s office. Bless you. Keep revival on. Thank you Jesus.

04 Touch the Screen Now For Healing?

TOUCH YOUR COMPUTER NOW!!!!  THE ANOINTING IS BEING RELEASED RIGHT NOW!!!

05 Chanting

Heather Clark is leading worship tonight.  She leads the crowd in a chanting melody…  BAPTIZE US IN THE HOLY SPIRIT!!!

The FIRE sweeps through the crowd.  Todd jumps up to the pulpit and commands every Senior Pastor from Florida to get up on the stage NOW!!!

They came RUNNING to the stage…  BAM BAM BAM…   they would cry out the name of their city…  then  BAM BAM BAM…  the pastors kept coming…  two lines…  then three lines!!!!

Then HERE CAME THE YOUTH PASTORS from Florida…  BAM BAM BAM…  the FIRE is burning up the stage and flowing out into the crowd!!!

BAPTIZE US IN THE HOLY SPIRIT!!!!   Heather keeps chanting it into the atmosphere.

06 The Lord Himself Appeared to Todd?

Todd shares…  on the morning of Mothers Day 1998…  Todd had a visitation of the Holy Spirit.  For over three months the power of God touched him.  But on Mothers Day, the Lord Himself appeared to him.

This is just a sample of quotes and comments from their blog over the past few days. Each of these statements have serious issues that I feel must be compared and contrasted with the Scriptures. The Lord willing I will do this in the next post.

In this clip Todd talks about his out of body experience, walking around the meeting hearing people talk about their diseases.

And if you needed any more persuasion that this movement is not of God listen to Todd Bentley describing the time God told him to not preach Jesus but to preach angels. For me this is the worst of all his errors. As Christians we are to constantly lift up Jesus and praise Him. Todd Bentley and his crowd are minimizing Jesus and preaching angels and miracles. Abortion Numbers Increasing in the UK

On the same day that a BBC article revealed that abortions by young girls are on the increase another report came out showing the realization of the harm abortions do to mothers (we believe the greatest “harm” is in the taking of the life of the child”).

First of all, here are some excerpts from the BBC article: Abortion increase in young girls

The number of abortions among girls aged under 16 rose by 10% to 4,376 in 2007, official figures for England and Wales show.

In the under 14s, abortions rose by 21% from 135 in 2006 to 163 last year.

The number of abortions in all women rose by 2.5% to reach an all time high of almost 200,000.

So with the increase in abortions, which probably means an increase in sexually active young people, what does our government recommend? Maybe they would recommend some teaching on abstinence? No, of course not.

Government advisers called for high quality sex education at school and investment in contraception services for young people.

This tactic has proven a failure. Ever since Blair and his New Labour government came to power they have advocated more and more sex education. Yet this same article records,

In the past decade, the number of abortions in the under 16s has risen by 27%.

As the sex education increased and was given to younger and younger people the number of abortions have increased.

This article has pointed out an increased usage of the so called abortion pill. What does not go quite so well reported is the number of complications and even deaths that occur due to some of these pills. Look here for more information: Teen Succumbs to Abortion Pill

Health Minister Dawn Primarolo said the figures showed considerable progress in reducing waiting times for abortion, with two-thirds of women now having a termination at under 10 weeks.

She added: “Contraception plays a vital role in preventing teenage pregnancy and earlier this year I announced a further investment of £26.8m to improve women’s access to contraception and help reduce the number of abortions, repeat abortions and teenage pregnancies.”

Contraception does indeed play a role in preventing pregnancies, but, abstaining from casual sex is the solution. This whole solution the government seeks is flawed for many reasons. Could you imagine them teaching students how to use a knife to prevent knife crime?

Also today I came across this article: Negative Effects of Abortion “Coming to Light”

The child who has her life taken is not the only victim in abortions, there are negative effects on the mother also.

In contrast to the UK’s policy of sex education and contraception there is more of an emphasis in the USA on abstinence. With that in mind consider these paragraphs from the article:

The poll shows abortion support dropping to a seven-year low, and that the percentage of pro-life Americans tied its highest level during the same time frame. Moira Gaul of the Family Research Council believes the results show that the public is better educated on the subject.

“There is an increased awareness that abortion harms women’s health,” says Gaul. “Abortion often isolates women and causes both physical and psychological suffering.”

Gaul says more research in both of these areas is coming to light, revealing that abortions can affect a woman’s ability to have future healthy pregnancies. And equally as important is the pro-life upswing in younger people and pro-life student groups, she notes.

God has set out the right and proper use for sex and relationships in the Bible. So much heartache could be spared if people would only listen to the Bible.

The Shack – A Broken Theology

I remember several years ago speaking with a man in the garden centre where I worked. He did not want a God that most churches he knew of portrayed. He wanted a God he could understand, one he could talk with and go to the bar and drink with. In essence he wanted a god of his own making, not the God of Scripture.

The ShackOne way in which this worldly philosophy has infiltrated the church is in some of the central aspects of what I understand about the emerging church. Something that seems to come up again and again is a kind of pseudo-humility where no certainty is allowed, no absolutes exist, we are just on a journey. That journey involves getting into the culture and using culture to reach people. The church has become a place for the world rather than a place for God’s people.

One of the most influential books, or perhaps the most reflective, is The Shack. I have had some friends recommend it strongly while others began it with interest but put it down with disappointment and even disgust after a couple of chapters.

I would highly recommend you read this booklet by Tim Challies – A Reader’s Review of The Shack

In a time of uncertainty in the world all it seems many churches want to do is reflect that uncertainty. Instead of standing firmly by “Thus saith the Lord” they fall back on experiance and describe their relationship with Christ as a journey rather than a destination. Indeed, the apostle Paul wrote that he did not count himself to have apprehended, he did not consider himself to have reached the pinnacle of what a Christian should be, but at the same time he taught and believed absolutes.

For many reasons this book, The Shack, should avoided and people should be discouraged from reading it. If you think this is harsh just read the booklet to which I have linked and I think you will understand.

The Shack may make a nice narrative, but it makes for very poor theology.

Excercise is Bad; Fat is Good

This past Sunday we had some great services at Church. Sunday evening we had a time of great fellowship and took some time to hear testimonies and share favourite hymns. Then I preached the introduction to a message on the basics of interpreting the Bible. We all have some rules and methods by which we interpret Scripture but we  do need to understand the basics of rightly dividing the Word of Truth. This is most apparent in eschatological matters.

After the service I had a great opportunity to demonstrate the importance of rightly dividing the Word. Two young men in the church, aged around 16-17, were joking with me about needing to get some exercise. I told them the Bible says bodily exercise profits little. They looked at me as if I were making it up and so I took them to I Timothy 4:8 – “For bodily exercise profiteth little: but godliness is profitable unto all things, having promise of the life that now is, and of that which is to come.”

MegachurchThen to confound them more I told them being godly meant you would be overweight. Again, they looked stunned, even more so than before. So I took them to Proverbs 28:25 – “He that is of a proud heart stirreth up strife: but he that putteth his trust in the LORD shall be made fat.”

They were almost speechless, and I thought I had better explain. It was a situation that illustrated well the importance of rightly dividing the Word.

But it was also very enjoyable winning the argument!

Sermons this Sunday

Sunday morning we will continue our resurrection series – Death, the End of the Beginning.

This week we come to the resurrection event at Nain when Jesus resurrects a widow’s only son. Each resurrection in Scripture I think teaches something specific. On this occassion I believe we see the compassion of Christ and we something of a compact illustration of the history of humanity. Just as the dead man could not ask for help, and did not deserve help, neither can we help ourselves or derserve any help. Yet down through history from Genesis 3 and onwards we see a loving God reaching out to His lost and dying creation. This Sunday we will take a glimpse at the history of salvation.

Sunday evening we conclude our three week look at Walking With God by Walking in the Word. We have looked at What the Bible Is, How to Read the Bible and finally we will look at How to Understand the Bible.

I am looking forward to seeing every in the services and pray that you enjoy your weekend!

Another Fad Passes, Sort of

While I am sure this particular fad will not completely disappear I believe it will decline. This fad depends very much on a strong economy because it is almost completely unnecessary. Which fad am I writing about? – Bottled water.

As the economy weakens and people consider more carefully what they spend their money on many are no longer splashing out on bottled water, if you will excuse the pun. Whether they bought the water for fashion or for convenience neither reason suffices any longer to justify the purchase. And it makes sense really, especially here in the United Kingdom. Our tap water is among the best in the world and though the quality may vary depending on where you live it is basically very good. So why, except for fashion or convenience, would you purchase it? The article to which I linked explains that in the US it would take around $6 a day to purchase bottled water but the same amount from the tap would cost about $.15!

Now why, you may ask, am I writing about bottled water? Well, because there are many such fads and fancies in modern churches and the fate of bottled water should serve as a warning to us.

Our worship style, our teachings and goals should not follow the whims of society and the world in general. Many believe that to be relevant you must be constantly changing and morphing to be whatever the world wants. The Bible, I am convinced, is relevant because it is truth and as long as we teach that truth honestly we will be relevant to every society in every age.

Perhaps more analogies to truth and consistency could be drawn from bottled water and tap water but we won’t go there.

God’s Word is unchanging and we do not need to chase the world’s changeable definition of relevancy or effectiveness. We need to be consistent to the Word of God. The Spirit of God will take the Word of God and do the work in the heart’s of individuals.

Getting Back the Passion

A couple of days ago I wrote an article concerning the lack of passion many seem to have for the Lord, a lack which many at some point experience.

A quick and accurate answer on how to get our passion back can be found in In I Samuel 7:3 the prophet Samuel commands the people of Israel,

If ye do return unto the LORD with all your hearts, then put away the strange gods and Ashtaroth from among you, and prepare your hearts unto the LORD, and serve him only…

Three clear steps are observable with one outcome: (1) Put away the strange Gods, (2) Prepare your hearts to serve the Lord and (3) Serve God only. The outcome will be that we will return to the Lord with all our hearts, God will be your passion.

What are the practical steps towards implementing such a course in our lives?

1. Put Away the Strange Gods – Get Rid of the Distractions

If something used to be your focus but no longer holds that place then in essence something has distracted you. It may be that you are in some state of depression or physical, mental, emotional or spiritual exhaustion so that there is essentially just a blur rather than any particular focus. Chances are, though, that instead of focusing on God you are focused on something or someone else.

My aim here is to deal with the changed focus rather than the absence of any focus. To regain the passion for God you must figure out what has taken pride of place, what is now the focus of your life.

  • What consumes your thoughts?
  • What do you do with your spare time?
  • What are your goals and aspirations?
  • What are your motivations?
  • As well consider what habitual, known sin in your life is keeping you from God.

2. Prepare Your Hearts to Serve the Lord – Get in the Presence of God

The word for prepare has many implications. The Hebrew carries the understanding of standing, figuratively and literally. It would not be out of place to infer a central tenant of repentance, of turning from sin and turning to God.

  • When we prepare our hearts to serve the Lord we are turning from sin to God.
  • When we prepare our hearts to serve God we are standing with clean hands and a pure heart in His presence (Psalm 24)
  • When we prepare our hearts to serve God we are in God’s presence, spending time with Him

We prepare ours to serve the Lord by spending time in the Word and in prayer. This is the key to regaining our passion – read the Scriptures and pray. Let the fire of God’s Word thaw your cold heart; let the Fire of the Word rekindle the flame of desire in your heart to serve the True and Living God; let the fire of the Word spread God’s love through you to a lost and dying world.

3 . Serve God Only

Once we have turned from our sin and refocused our heats and minds on God then we must get on with the business of serving Him.

It is not enough to get right with God we must, by His grace, stay right with Him. We can make sure this happens by staying in the Word and by actively serving God with our lives.


The application to the Scripture above gives the broad headings of what needs to happen. Briefly I want to share further steps to help in regaining the passion:

  • See God for the great God that He is
  • Compare the temporary works of sin with the eternal fruit of righteousness
  • Consider the greatest joy for yourself and those around you comes only when God is first in your life
  • Understand the plight of the sinner plunging into Hell for a Christ-less eternity

It ultimately comes back to getting our eyes off of sin and self and back onto God and those around us.

Much more could probably be said and perhaps what has been shared could have been better written. However, I feel this is a topic I will be returning to in the coming weeks.

7 Helps to Reading the Bible

Martin Luther said,

“I study my Bible like I gather apples. First, I shake the whole tree that the ripest may fall. Then I shake each limb, and when I have shaken each limb, I shake each branch and every twig. Then I look under every leaf. I search the Bible as a whole like shaking the whole tree. Then I shake every limb–study book after book. Then I shake every branch, giving attention to the chapters. Then I shake every twig, or a careful study of the paragraphs and sentences and words and their meanings.“

How Should We Read the Bible?

  1. Clean, spiritually – Matthew 13:22; I Samuel 7:3; Psalm 24:3 (a.) Make sure no sin stands between you and God (b.) Prepare your heart to receive the Word
  2. Concentrate (focus) – Psalm 5:3; Psalm 130:6; Mark 1:35 (a.) Focus on the task at hand (b.) Put all distractions aside
  3. Constant – Psalm 55:17; 119:52; Deuteronomy 11:18; (a.) Memorise Scripture (b.) Meditate on Scripture throughout the day “Meditate on what you read. [Ps. 119:15] The Hebrew word for meditate’ means to be intense in the mind’. Meditation without reading is wrong and bound to err; reading without meditation is barren and fruitless. It means to stir the affections, to be warmed by the fire of meditation [Ps. 39:3].” – Thomas Watson
  4. Comprehensively – Acts 20:27; Matthew 28:20; II Timothy 3:16 (a.) Read the Word each day (b.) Have a plan to read all of Scripture
  5. Conscientiously – Psalm 119:72; I Peter 2:2; James 4:6 (a.) Realize the Bible is the Word of God! (b.) Realize the worth of Scripture (c.) Humbly go to the Lord for help in understanding (d.) How does the Bible apply to me? (e.) How does the Bible apply to my situation?
  6. Carefully – John 3:16; Hosea 8:12 (a.) Read each word and know its meaning (b.) Read each verse and know its context (c.) Read each chapter and know its purpose in its book (d.) Read each book and know its themes and its relation to other books (e.) Read each Testament and follow the links between them

Conclusion:

“The noted Bible scholar James M. Gray told a story that underscores the importance of reading the Scriptures for personal growth.

“He said that when he was a young Bible teacher he became deeply impressed by the peace and spiritual poise of a friend with whom he often talked.

“Since Gray wanted that same stability, he asked his companion the secret of his confident bearing and positive outlook.

“It all started through reading Ephesians,” said the man. Gray was surprised by this simple response. He had read Ephesians many times but had never experienced the same strength he saw in his friend. Noticing Gray’s puzzled look, the man explained.

“On one occasion, when I was on a short vacation, I took a pocket edition of Ephesians with me. Lying down one afternoon, I read all six chapters. My interest was so aroused that I read the entire epistle again. In fact, I did not finally lay it down until I had gone through it some 15 times.”

He then said, “When I arose to go into the house, I was in possession of Ephesians; or better yet, it was in possession of me. I had the feeling that I had been lifted up to sit together in heavenly places with Christ Jesus–a feeling that was new to me.”

“This testimony encouraged Gray to master the Scriptures for himself. He began to saturate his mind and heart with God’s Word so that he could freely and effectively communicate it to others.” – James M. Gray

A Father to Follow (Resrrections Series Part 4)

In the morning services we are currently going through the resurrections in Scripture. Just as we found ourselves looking at a resurrection that pertained to our missions conference on that weekend today we find ourselves studying a resurrection that points to a loving father.

As Jesus begins moving through the crowd a loving Father runs out to meet Jesus and this where we pick up our text today. Through the actions of Jairus on this occasion I believe we can draw some important truths for fathers.

Luke 8:40 – end of chapter

1. Fathers Need to Know Their Children’s Needs – (41-42)

We have to discern between our children’s wants and our children’s needs. Our children cannot always discern their needs from their wants so we must do it for them. The danger in not choosing between needs and wants is sometimes a need goes unmet while many wants are fulfilled.

Jairus know his child’s needs in this extreme situation, but chances are it took an extreme situation to get his attention.

We often know what is best for our children, not other people. In an age where the government is described as being a “nanny” state we have to be willing to step out and determine what is best for our child. Follow good advice from friends and family, but don’t ignore common sense.

We have to take the time to know our children so that we can know their needs. We need to be unselfish and focused upon them rather than focused upon ourselves. We cannot understand what we do not give focused attention toward. If we are constantly distracted and not paying attention to our children then we will not know their needs

What do children need?

  • Love – Equal, Unconditional, Tough Love
  • Time – Quality time, Focused, individual time
  • Teaching - Everyone should always be learning, Study how to be a parent (We study for everything else) We teach in many ways (Words, actions, re-actions, priorities,)
  • Consistency – Never fall back on the “Do as I say not as I do” line, Ecclesiastes 10:1 – The danger of a little Inconsistency, We do not have to be perfect, we just have to be as consistent as possible. We have to be seen to be constantly striving for a particular set of standards
  • Boundaries – You are not primarily your child’s friend, you are his parent. Sometimes parents have to do what no friend could or would. Children thrive on boundaries. Boundaries are a way for children to know that someone cares. They may fight, but they need them
  • Protection and Provision

2. Fathers Need to be Humble Enough to Ask for Help – (41)
When Jairus and his wife faced an impossible situation they were humble enough to turn to Christ and fall at His feet. As a ruler of the synagogue many things could have stopped him from going to Jesus.

Being a father can be difficult, asking for help and advice is essential. What stops us from asking for help as a parent?

  • The general idea that parenting is common sense
  • The idea that there is no answer to parenting questions, we just stumble along and hope for the best
  • The fear of looking stupid – this stops a lot of people asking a lot of questions in every walk of life
  • We don’t want to do things differently from everyone else

Humility means a problem is recognised
Humility accepts there may be a better way, a higher goal
Humility looks to a superior for help

3. Fathers Need to Love Enough to Take Action (41)

As a ruler of the synagogue going to Jesus could and probably would have cost Jairus heavily. All the things we mentioned above were genuine issues.

  • He probably lost his job
  • He probably lost some friends
  • He probably lost his social standing

But he had his child!

Sometimes our actions do carry a cost. Jesus spoke of the cost involved in serving Him: Luke 14:28-32

What stops us from meeting our children’s needs?

  • Do we need to sacrifice a hobby?
  • Do we need to have less economically in order to have more in our relationships?
  • I know some who could not have kept their heads above water without working the hours they did
  • I know others who worked just to be able to buy more stuff
  • Do we need to give up a bad habit? Do we need to start some good habits?
  • Do we need to do things they enjoy rather than the things I enjoy?

Are we willing to pay whatever the cost may be in order to be a good father?

4. Fathers Need to Set the Example in Faith (50)

Others advised Jairus to give up hope for his child. Jesus encouraged him to believe – Jairus followed Jesus. Jairus was a leader in the community, but when needed, he was a leader for his family. Fathers need to be willing to take the lead spiritually and set a good example

Fathers need to have a genuine relationship with God so that they can demonstrate that relationship to their children. When the others were put out of the room only a couple of disciples and the father and mother remained in the room (51)

5. Fathers Who Parent Biblically Have No Regrets

Biblical parents may wish they had been more faithful, they may wish they had been more Biblical but where they led Biblically they will have no regrets. Jairus went to Jesus and Jairus received his daughter back again!

I can guarantee that this Bible has the key to being a good Father. Apart from the verses which tell us how to parent effectively, we also have the greatest example of a father, our Heavenly Father.

We have seen several aspects from Jairus on being a good father and drawn a few conclusions. I want to add to that list and consider how God is our Heavenly Father.

  • Fathers Need to Know Their Children’s Needs – Matthew 6:7-8
  • Fathers Need to Love Enough to Take Action – I John 3:16
  • Fathers Need to Set the Example in Faith – Hebrews 4:15
  • Fathers Who Parent Biblically Have No Regrets – John 3:16
  • A Good Father spends time with his children -John 14:23
  • A Good Father instructs his children
  • A Good Father sets the example for his children
  • A Good Father puts his children first
  • A Good Father provides for his children
  • A Good Father corrects his children
  • A Good Father protects his children
  • A Good Father listens to his children
  • A Good Father enjoys his children
  • A Good Father accepts his children for who they are
  • A Good Father has hopes for his children
  • A Good Father is patient with his children
  • A Good Father forgives his children
  • A Good Father prepares his children
  • A Good Father counsels his children

Higher IQ Equals Less Faith?

Here is the main statement from the article:

People with higher IQs are less likely to believe in God, according to a new study.

Now some have already argued that such a study and it’s results are too simplistic. It completely ignores cultural and social influences on those who move in differing circles.

It could be easily proven that there are individuals with a very high IQ who do believe in God, but then we get into arguing via statistics.

Why would someone with a higher IQ not believe in God? Well, you would need to consider not just the IQ, but the influences in their social and academic circles. It used to be that every scientist, more or less, believed in God, but many of them probably did not really. But, because of the social and academic influences of the time they professed to believe. Now things have changed. So instead of looking at IQ levels, we need to consider the many other factors involved.

My grandfather used to know a brilliant scientist who understood everything you could know about molecular structures, but he could not make a cup of tea. The headline could be, “Intelligent People Incapable of Simple Tasks”.

Headlines and statistics are no true measure of the facts of life as both can be easily manipulated.

Where Did All the Passion Go? – Part 1

Fire All Your Arrows!

Recently I spoke with a British pastor in England who has found raising people’s passions something of a challenge.

I have wondered if this ties into the island’s natural temperament? After all, many describe the English as “reserved”, and perhaps that explains why we do not get too passionate about God. I have certainly thought this for a while, but now I am not too sure.

An old joke about the British and religion will demonstrate the national stereotypes and how that links with our relationship with God. It is said that religion is popular in the UK.

The reason being that the English like it because they can talk about it, the Welsh like it because they can sing about it, the Northern Irish like it because they can fight about it and the Scottish like it because it is free.

It could be said that each nation gets somewhat passionate about religion and it overspills into national stereotypes (rightly or wrongly). While three nations sing, fight or get it for free the English are singled out for just talking.

You may think I am making too much of an old joke, but most stereotypes are based in some measure of truth. The general consensus being that the English are not a passionate people, not easily excited, not very demonstrative in their emotions and all of these are amplified in regards to religion.

But the problem of raising people’s passions for God is not a British problem, it is people problem. For where you have people you will certainly have problems raising passions for God. Even in the most excessive “amen’ing” churches in the USA you can still find true passion lacking. Maybe you will have more noise, maybe a few jumping up and down thumping their Bibles, but sadly that can just be a performance, something you do at church. I am not making any judgments or criticisms, I am just making the point that a lack or an excess of outward reaction does not equate to a lack or an abundance of passion for God.

Passion for God is not measured by what we do for 45 minutes Sunday morning, it is measured by how we live our lives moment by moment.

  • Are we passionate about obeying God?
  • Are we passionate about reading His Word?
  • Are we passionate about singing His praises?
  • Are we passionate about prayer?
  • Are we passionate about witnessing?
  • Are we passionate about world evangelism?

Now, let us return to the British Isles and consider the supposed lack of passion.

Do football supporters lack passion? No, they can often tell you football results from 10 years ago. Do movie fans lack passion? No, they will travel hours to see a famous actor or remember meaningless facts from hundreds of films. Do pop fans lack passion? No, they will sing along and party for hours at a time in a concert. Do political pundits lack passion? No, they will canvas neighbourhoods with political positions

So, the passion is there, it is just lacking in one place that matters, people’s relationship with God and their service in their local church.

Lastly, we should not confuse passion with excitement. A person’s life will conform to its passions; excitement is for the moment.

We need to consider what our passions our and perhaps discover them by what is shaping our lives.

More Translation Information

A good pastor and friend of mine in London made some comments in an e-mail recently that I wanted to share here on the site. Jack Moorman has studied this whole issue in great detail. Some people on both sides of the discussion have never really looked into the issue personally, they just parrot what others have said. However, Pastor Moorman has studied this extensively and really is one of the best able men to comment. Here is what he wrote:

On the textual question: The Aleph B text (the most accurate name for it) which underlies the modern versions is based on witnesses where there is often a wide disparity of variants. Whereas with the different editions of the TR (Erasmus, Stephanus, Beza and others) and of the Traditional Text generally, there is only a narrow margin of difference, and only enough to show that the editions where independent productions. Further, rather than lateral copies of each other, our extant Traditional Text MSS represent long vertical lines of transmission. The Critical Text attempts to emphasize our minutiae and avoid the huge disparity in their witnesses.

The AV is based on a composite of the TR editions, but mainly on a later Beza edition (1598). This is reflected in the 1894 edition produced by F. H. A. Scrivener. It is stated to reproduce the “The Greek Text Underlying the Authorised Version of 1611″. This is the edition of the TR that the Trinitarian Bible Society now publishes. There are a few places (a very few) where the Scrivener text is said to be at variance with the AV. I marked several of these when when preparing the 8000 Differences list (all the differences between the Scrivener and Nestle-Aland text). As time permits I want to look at this question more fully. I am not certain that the differences are actual. If they are actual, I would certainly stay with the AV for the obivious reason that Scrivener’s TR followed rather than preceded the AV.

Can We Trust the Bible?

If you have read the last couple of posts you may be asking a different question all together. You may not care about which version of the Bible an individual uses, you may be more interested in knowing can we even trust the Bible?

This is the question someone recently e-mailed and asked me about. Here is the brief reply I sent him. Perhaps as a church in the near future we can take each of these points and elaborate on them:

1. I believe the Bible because of its internal consistency

As I am sure you know the Bible contains 66 books, in two broad sections or Testaments, written over several thousand years by around 40 different authors in three languages and on several continents. Now, I know you have heard that before, but let each of those facts sink in. Then realize the Bible is consistent all the way through. Sometimes we may perceive an inconsistency, but with a little study these are always solved.

2. I believe the Bible because of its prophetical accuracy

Prophetically the Bible has been accurate time and again. Even now we see global events that are spelled out in Scripture.

3. I believe the Bible because of its archeological accuracy

Cities and even entire civilizations in the Old Testament that scientists once laughed at and derided have been discovered through archeology. Do a google search for the Hittites for just once example.

4. I believe the Bible because of its anthropological accuracy

By anthropological I mean by the Bibles description of man, his problems and the solutions. Psychology provides literally hundreds of methods of analyzing and solving man’s problems and yet they fail time and again. God’s Word offers real and lasting solutions.

5. I believe the Bible because of personal experience

Although subjective in nature I still offer this as an evidence. God’s Word has been found true in the experience of not just me, but in the lives of hundreds of thousands down through the ages.

6. I believe the Bible because of its preservation

No other book has been so broadly and consistently attacked, and yet the Bible still stands.

7. I believe the Bible because of its scientific accuracy

Although the Bible is not a scientific book it does have scientific declarations which have been found true. Many times these statements were written many hundreds and even thousands of years before science made the discovery.

8. I believe the Bible because it is 110% better than any of the alternatives

Compared to the Koran or any other writing the Bible is infinitely superior.

These are just the highlights but I think any book that can make such claims and be found true has to be of God. It can be trusted with your eternal destiny.

So, what will you do with the Word of God and its claims?

Elizabethan English or the New King James Version

I appreciate the replies and want to address two further issues.

1. Why Use “olde” English?

Well, there are several reasons I appreciate the older English. First, it is used more accurately many times. There are some words which I think have to be used regardless of whether the “masses” understand them. There is such a thing as irreducible complexity. We can only simplify language so much before it begins to lose its plain meaning. Where one word is removed and 2 or 3 descriptive words are put in its place then we do not have a plainer translation, but a longer and ultimately more difficult translation.

The older translation has a broader vocabulary and if certain words are unfamiliar then we should use a dictionary.

Well not the most important or powerful argument, and indeed it is subjective, I believe the older English is more powerful and poetic.

2. Why Not Use the New King James Version

Well, I do not believe the NKJV is as closely allied to the KJV as some may think. Others have documented the exact differences and you can find them easily online or in print.

The translators of the NKJV did not just replace the “thees and thous” and update so called atiquated language. They did far more. Words were added and taken away and some words and phrases were translated in an entirely different manner.

Why Do We Use the Authorised Version?

Hugh” recently left a comment on the site asking why we use the version we do. Here is his comment:

What sort of bible are you using.? You must have got it out of the ark itself.!

The quote on John 3;16 is nowhere emphatic enough and “should” must read ” shall”.

Who goes around these days talking in 16th century language.?

Here was my reply:

Good Morning,

I use the Authorised Version for a variety of reasons. Primarily because of the textual support of the original manuscripts which support the Textus Receptus. I also, use the AV because of the manner of translations, formal equivalency as opposed to dynamic equivalency. If someone wants to write a commentary then great, but they should not write a commentary and call it a translation. Very often dynamic equivalency does little more than interpret rather than translate. Lastly, the words used in the AV may not always be in common usage but overall I believe it is simpler. Where the AV uses one perhaps less known word many new versions use several words which amount to more of a description of the word rather than a translation. Anyway, there are the highlights.

I believe you know exactly what translation is being used. The whole tone of your e-mail was typical of some I have met who grasp at every version that comes along, even those which contradict each other. You asked a question to which you knew the answer and belittled my position, then closed by trying to give a blessing? What is that all about?

Just thought I would share a little about why we use the Bible Version we do. There are those who think we do things at Faith Baptist just because that is the way we have always done it.

However, we fervantly study the Word of God and keep an eye on current trends. Everything we do and everything you see is the result of careful Bible study, cultural considerations and diligent prayer.

You may disagree, but do not think that anything we do is by accident.

Forget Global Warming – We’re Destroying the Universe

Mankind ’shorterning the universes’ life’

On the surface it may seem like a theologically correct statement. After all, the Bible teaches that God created the world perfect but that the world “fell” through Adam’s sin.universe

When Adam sinned the whole of creation became tainted by his action. In the New Testament book of Romans we find that “Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:” In another chapter (8), we read of the wider implications, “For we know that the whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain together until now.”

So, man sinned, suffering and death came into the world, Adam’s descendents all suffer and die and the universe itself began a process of decay.

(As a side line, existance outside of God, to me, seems ultimately worthless. We have 70-80 years in this world, a mere flash in evolutionary terms, and then it is over. Over the years all energy will break down, all the stars will die, heat will dissapate and eventually the whole universe will be dark, cold and lifeless. Yay!)

Anyway, I digress.

Despite God’s public, and very incorrect, image of an angry old man, sitting in the clouds just waiting to strike people down with lightening, God is in fact kind, merciful and loving. Indeed, not just loving, but love itself.

Christ, the Son of God, died, not because of a faulty Jewish legal system driven by jealous leaders, but because of my sin and your sin. The penalty for doing wrong is death, eternal separation from God in Hell. But, even though we, by our actions, are the enemies of God, God provided a way for us to be saved. Jesus Christ, on the cross, took on Himself all of the punishment sinners deserved. Now if we repent, trust in Him, and ask God to forgive for Christ’s sake, we can be saved.

The article to which I link is not actually anything to do with theology it turns out. Instead it has to do with watched kettles never boiling or something… when we observe something we change it, we have observed the universe, dark matter etc, and in so doing have damaged it and shortened the life of the universe…

The Father Has No Rights

In a court ruling covered by BBC News it has been ruled that a young woman does not have to let the father of her child know of the baby’s existence.

There are areas in the article that make mention of the fact that the woman wants her child adopted in order to give the baby a better life. This is admirable, but, surely this comes back, in part, to the problem of promiscuity in our society. If the man is not capable of being a father then what business did she have sleeping with the guy?

A deeper and more troubling issue is this: “Lady Justice Arden said the father’s rights had not been violated because he did not have any to violate.

Did you get that? The father has no rights… I wonder how that argument would hold if the young woman in question were looking for child support.

The deeper problem is that the government seem to be systematically driving the father out of the family.

The God-ordained family unit includes Father and Mother. The British government’s policy seems to be ruling against God’s plan. The result? Broken families, broken communities and a broken country.

Due to time constraints I will leave it here. But think on that short statement made by Lady Justice Arden, the father has no rights…

Abortion – The Hidden Holocaust Part 11

Summery and Conclusion:

  • Abortion murders innocent babies
    • Apart from medical intervention to save the life of the mother no motive for abortion is acceptable
    • Abortion harms the mother physically, emotionally and spiritually.
  • Life is sacred
    • God is the giver and taker of life and it is an affront on God when we murder
    • We are not the ones to decide whether a life is worth living
  • Abortion is a slippery slope
    • As stated before, when our most vulnerable are wilfully murdered then the whole of society will morally collapse
  • Support is available
    • To that mother or family who face heart ache and difficulties due to an expected child please know there is support.
    • You are not alone in the trial and you have friends who will help, advise, comfort and support you.
    • To the ones who have already had abortion, please know that God forgives and He heals.
    • We are not here to judge you but to show you Christ.

Finally, I want to challenge believers.

  • Do not just look the other way – Leviticus 20:1-5

1 And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, 2 Again, thou shalt say to the children of Israel, Whosoever he be of the children of Israel, or of the strangers that sojourn in Israel, that giveth any of his seed unto Molech; he shall surely be put to death: the people of the land shall stone him with stones.  3 And I will set my face against that man, and will cut him off from among his people; because he hath given of his seed unto Molech, to defile my sanctuary, and to profane my holy name.  4 And if the people of the land do any ways hide their eyes from the man, when he giveth of his seed unto Molech, and kill him not:  5 Then I will set my face against that man, and against his family, and will cut him off, and all that go a whoring after him, to commit whoredom with Molech, from among their people.”

God does not call us to administer this capital punishment, but in this day of grace God calls us to share the message of forgiveness and salvation. However, this passage demonstrates how seriously God views the murder of innocent children.

Molech was a false god some ancient civilisations worshipped and behind him you will find a devil right out of the pit of hell. I will not share details but children were burned alive to appease this false idol.

A parallel can be drawn to the parents who abort their child because they want to maintain their standard of living, their reputation, their figure, their social life and social standing. Today they are not burned on an altar but many chemical abortions have the same effect upon the unborn baby.

I cannot apologise if this seems overly graphic or if it disturbs you. One of the greatest success stories of the pro-abortion movement has been to move the facts and these gruesome details out of the discussion. They say foetus instead of baby and abortion instead of murder. The pictures are too disturbing to display publicly but they are acceptable to cause.

Apparently it was pictures of the Jewish holocaust that spurred many on to defeat Nazi Germany. Today we face another holocaust with many millions more victims. Some have called it the hidden holocaust.

God challenged Israel and the same challenge is brought to us now – do not hide your eyes, do not turn away, face this wickedness head on and let us do our part to stop the killing.

Abortion – The Hidden Holocaust Part 10

a.       Forgiveness for Guilty

  • We do not need to find specific mention of forgiveness for abortion because forgiveness for all sin includes all sins 
    • I John 1:7

But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.” 

    • Galatians 2:16

16 Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified.

    • Ephesians 1:7

(3) For we ourselves also were sometimes foolish, disobedient, deceived, serving divers lusts and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful, and hating one another.  (4) But after that the kindness and love of God our Saviour toward man appeared,  (5) Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;  (6) Which he shed on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Saviour;  (7) That being justified by his grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life.

Conclusion:

Every Scriptural passage we have seen, and many others beside, speaks of the child in the womb as an actual human being. God views the child in the womb as alive and human just as much as the child of 5 or the man of 50!  

These Scriptures reveal several vital truths about the unborn child from his earliest stages:

  • They are 100% human (agreed by science)
  • They are unique individuals (agreed by science)
  • They are considered alive before birth
  • They have intrinsic worth – just as much as any born individual
    • Intrinsic value says something is of value simply by virtue of what it is
    • Instrumental value says something is of value only if it performs some action or role
  • They have a specific purpose in the eyes of God
  • We are all born sinners

Abortion in the News

Note: At the end of this blog I have some pictures of babies in the womb, nothing graphic or distressing, but it is in the context of discussing babies at those stages of development being aborted.

The BBC has a report today on abortion. The BBC headline states: Public ‘backs easier abortions’. The first paragraph the gives the statistics that appears to say that people want permission for an abortion made easier (emphasis added):

Women should not have to gain the permission of two doctors to obtain an abortion in Britain, a slim majority of respondents to a survey have said.

Some 35% said one doctor was enough and 17% thought permission should not needed at all, the poll for pro-choice campaign Abortion Rights found.”

In a later paragraph it makes two comments I want to draw your attention to. First, abortion is legal up to 24 weeks and then the statistic that only one doctor should be needed to give permission for an abortion up until the baby is 14 weeks.

Remember, a baby has a recognizable heartbeat and brainwaves from 3 weeks and 6 weeks respectively. I believe abortion at any stage is wrong, but during these time frames a doctor is deliberately stopping a heart beat and brain functions… if they did that to any one outside the womb on purpose it would be murder.

8 Year Anniversary

Today we celebrate all that the Lord has done for and through Faith Baptist Church. God only knows the impact the church has had in the lives of a great many over these years. As man looks on the outward appearance we may seem small but God has accomplished much through this ministry.

Prayer: The power of prayer is not measured in quantity of people, but in the quality of faith those people exercise. Over the years we have seen many answers to prayer in small and great matters, personally and as a fellowship, locally and even internationally.

International Missions: We currently support in prayer and finances the Clements in England, the Perez’s in Spain, Joe Gammon in the USA, the Craigs in South Africa, the Cosgraves in Malaysia and the Jouans in Cameroon. Over the years tens of thousands of pounds have been sent to help spread the Gospel in the regions beyond. Local Missions: Individuals have been encouraged to share their faith in Christ from the very beginning of Faith Baptist Church. We have also held many evangelistic services for all ages. As well as bringing friends and family to hear the Gospel we have taken the Gospel to them. Through door-to-door evangelism and the distribution of Gospel literature we have taken the Gospel to our community. I would guess the quantity of literature distributed would be at least 80,000. On top of this videos and tapes were taken to the immediate area.

Teaching: Faith Baptist has always had a strong focus on teaching truth by the faithful exposition of the Bible. FBC has achieved much by God’s grace in the past few years and God has been gracious to us. Hundreds of lives have been touched and we trust helped.

FBC has had a great eight years. I pray the Lord will give us a “godly discontent”, that in the next eight years Faith will grow from strength to strength!

This morning I spoke on the Purpose and Plan God has laid out for His church. It looked back at what God has done with the church, but focused on who and what we are and how to move forward in the future.

This evening John gave a brief testimony and Kyle and Karen sang for us. The message was on the Old, Old Story of Jesus and His Love.

I thank God for bringing us to FBC and genuinely am excited what God will do in the next few years.

Windows, Signs, and More

Windows

For along time now we have needed new windows in the church. Apart from looking bad, we had safety concerns. As well, heating a building with old windows is more expensive. This week the new windows were finally put in! I thank God they went in with no problems and before the special services that we have coming up.

Signs

After several companies letting us down with getting the signs updated and/or replaced one company has finally come through. They are working on some designs for us and will get some proposals to us in the next few days.

Special Services

A lot more has been happening with leaflets and preparation for the special services. We are excited about these things, but we hope there will be spiritual blessings also. We look for individuals to come to Christ and for believers to be blessed and helped.

Home Again

It has been a busy but blessed weekend. I enjoyed the opportunity to fellowship with Phil and Connie Lord and Bloomsbury Evangelical Free Church.

However, I am always glad to be home. I missed being at Faith on Sunday and am looking forward to our anniversary weekend! I know we had a few visitors this week and I am disappointed I missed them. Hopefully we will see visitors again this week. Pray and work to make this happen.

We long to see individuals coming to our services and hearing the wonderful truths found in God’s Word! If you are thinking about visiting with us then know that we would love to see you.

Failed Abortion Story – Gianna Jessen

Islam and Scientology

On October 3rd and October 10th at 7:30pm Cecil Andrews will be with us to give presentations on two belief systems.

On October 3rd he will deal with Islam. Currently it is the fastest growing religion in the world and we need to know what they teach and what it means for the Christian.

October 10th will deal with Scientology. This comparatively new religion has made great gains in recent years, helped along by endorsements from big Hollywood names. It is another false Gospel and it will help the Christian to know what they believe.

Abortion – The Hidden Holocaust Part 9

a.       The Historical Example

  • Many Christians believed any abortion at any stage was murder

“You shall not kill an unborn child or murder a newborn infant.” – Didache.

“You shall love your neighbor more than your own life. You shall not slay the child by abortion.” – Barnabas [c. 70-138], Epistles.

“For us [Christians], murder is once and for all forbidden; so even the child in womb, while yet the Mother’s blood is still being drawn on to form the human being, it is not lawful for us to destroy. To forbid birth is only quicker murder…He is a man, who is to be a man; the fruit is always present in the seed.” – Tertullian, 197, Apologeticus.

“Those women who use drugs to bring about an abortion commit murder and will have to give an account to God for their abortion.” – Athenagoras of Athens, letter to Marcus Aurelius in 177, Legatio pro Christianis [Supplication for the Christians].

“There are women who, by use of medicinal potions, destroy the unborn life in their wombs, and murder the child before they bring it forth. These practices undoubtedly are derived from a custom established by your gods; Saturn. Though he did not expose his sons, certainly devoured them.” – Minucius Felix, theologian [c. 200-225] Octavius.

“If we would not kill off the human race born and developing according to God’s plan, then our whole lives would be lived according to nature. Women who make use of some sort of deadly abortion drug kill not only the embryo but, together with it, all human kindness.” – Clement of Alexandria, priest and the “Father of Theologians” [c. 150-220]. Christ the educator.

“Sometimes this lustful cruelty or cruel lust goes so far as to seek to procure a baneful sterility, and if this fails the fetus conceived in the womb is in one way or another smothered or evacuated, in the desire to destroy the offspring before it has life, or if it already lives in the womb, to kill it before it is born.” – St. Augustine, Bishop of Hippo [354 to 430], De Nuptius et Concupiscus [On Marriage and Concupiscence).

"Some virgins [unmarried women], when they learn they are with child through sin, practice abortion by the use of drugs, frequently they die themselves and are brought before the ruler of lower world guilty of three crimes: suicide, adultery against Christ, and murder of an unborn child.” – St. Jerome [c. 340-420], Letter to Eustochium.

“The hairsplitting difference between formed and unformed makes no difference to us. Whoever deliberately commits abortion is subject to the penalty for homicide.” – St. Basil the Great [329- 379], “First Canonical Letter,” Three Canonical Letters.

“Those who give drugs for procuring abortion, and those who receive poisons to kill the fetus, are subjected to the penalty for murder.” – Trullian Quinisext Council (692), Canons.

  • Some Christians believed in “delayed ensoulment”.

This teaching was propagated and popularised by the secular Aristotle. Aristotle taught that:

  • The foetus originally has a vegetable soul
  • This evolves into an animal soul later in gestation
  • At some later state the foetus is “animated” with a human soul. This event is also called ensoulment
    • Ensoulment was believed to occur 40 days after conception for a male
    • Ensoulment was believed to occur 90 days after conception for a female
  • Interestingly it is after around 90 days, the first trimester, when many begin to restrict abortions.
  • Perhaps this pagan, secular thought permeates our society more than we believe.
  • This belief in “delayed ensoulment” was widely accepted in Rome and Greek culture
  • The much revered Augustine followed Aristotle in this area, and in the pagan Greek interpretive method of allegory

Abortion – The Hidden Holocaust Part 9

I.                    The Scriptures

a.       Life in the Womb

A Life for a Life – Exodus 21:22-25

If a woman gets caught up in a fight and is accidentally or deliberately hit and consequently prematurely gives birth then there were definite repercussions.

If the child was born and no mischief followed, i.e. the child did not die, then the father of the child was to determine the punishment.

If the child was born and mischief followed, i.e., the child died, then the man responsible for hitting the womb was to be put to death, a life for a life. God considers the unborn baby to be alive.

  • People and not cells are sinners – Psalm 51:5

Behold, I was shapen in iniquity; and in sin did my mother conceive me.”

This verse points out that we all enter this world with a sin nature.  Paul writes about this in Romans 5:2, “Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned.” We are sinners by our nature and very early on we are sinners by choice.

The sin nature exists in our soul and spirit and not in individual cells within our body. The inspired psalmist writes here that from his conception God considered him a sinner and therefore a person.

  • Life Before Birth

Romans 9:11 – “For the children being not yet born, neither having done any good or evil, that the purpose of God according to election might stand, not of works, but of him that calleth;”

Genesis 25:22 – “And the children struggled together within her; and she said, If it be so, why am I thus? And she went to enquire of the LORD.”

The two children spoken of here, Jacob and Esau, were not born and yet were counted as persons. The word in Genesis for “children” (like the Greek for children in Luke 1) is a word used before and after birth. Obviously God sees no difference between a child before or after birth. Both in God eyes are children and worthy of life.

  • God knows the unborn child – Jeremiah 1:5

Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations.”

God had a purpose for Jeremiah before he was born and even before he was formed in the belly.

The significant point is that God knew Jeremiah and had a purpose for him before his birth.

  • A “Man child” from Conception – Job 3:3

Let the day perish wherein I was born, and the night in which it was said, There is a man child conceived.”

From the moment it was known that Job’s mother was expecting Job was considered a human being, a child. The inspired Scriptures go further and state that from conception he was considered a child!

A baby before and after birth – Luke 1:41

And it came to pass, that, when Elisabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb; and Elisabeth was filled with the Holy Ghost:”

In this passage the word used for the babe in the womb is the same as the word used for a child after birth. God sees no difference.

  • New Testament Sorcery Forbidden - Galatians 5:19, Revelation 21:8
    • The Greek word for witchcraft is pharmakeia. Thayer translates it as meaning:
      • 1) the use or the administering of drugs
      • 2) poisoning
      • 3) sorcery, magical arts, often found in connection with idolatry and fostered by it
      • 4) metaphorically the deceptions and seductions of idolatry
    • Chemical abortions happened in the first century the same way that it does now.
    • A concoction of chemicals was used to kill the unborn baby
    • Pharmakeia may mean witchcraft, but I believe there is a strong case for believing it means a chemically induced abortion

b.      Help for the Needy

  • The fatherless and widows
    • Man of the principles involved in caring for the fatherless and widows may be applied to potential victims of abortion and pressured mothers
    • Historically orphans, widows have suffered the most in society.
    • Today not a great deal has changed
  • The Scriptural Command
    • Deuteronomy 10:17-21
    • Deuteronomy 14:29
    • Deuteronomy 24:20 – Economic commands to help the needy
    • Deuteronomy 27:19 – A curse on those who abuse the needy
    • Psalm 10:14 – God cares for the needy
    • Psalm 68:5 – A Father to the fatherless
    • Psalm 82 – Help the poor and needy
    • Isaiah 1:17 – Foundations of Society
    • Jeremiah 7:1-6 – Commanded to help the needy
    • James 1:27 – The New Testament Connection

Northwest Baptist Church

Today Pastor Travis Snode and the people of Northwest Baptist Church officially open in the community. For a while they met in the Snode’s home, then recently they moved to a local hotel. After several months of announcing this day it has finally arrived. Literally tens of thousands of leaflets have gone out and many thousands have been spoken to.

Please pray that God blesses today exceeding abundantly! Pastor Travis has a great burden to share the Gospel so pray that many come today to hear the preaching of the Word of God!

Abortion – The Hidden Holocaust Part 8

a.       Where are we headed?

The logical conclusions to current trends are not knee jerk reactions from Christians but truth verified by ethicists like Peter Singer. Peter Singer and others believe that parents should have the right to take the life of a child any time up until 28 days after the child has been born.

If the only reason for killing a child is due to his MS, Down syndrome or a missing limb, then what about those in society? If a child in the womb does not deserve to live then what about adults with exactly the same or more serious conditions?

If killing a baby in the womb is okay then why not a baby outside of the womb? After all, the only difference is size.

If killing a baby in the womb because of an illness or handicap is okay then why not kill those who are deemed useless to society or a burden to society?

What about the old? Are they not a drain on society? What do they contribute? Why not kill them?

We will consider this slippery slope more this evening when we talk about eugenics and euthanasia.

Conclusion: Society collapses when the most vulnerable lose their right to life, protection and value. Since the beginning of legalised abortion child abuse and other violent crime has risen dramatically. After all, if it is okay to kill a baby in the womb why not beat on him or her in the home?

Update from SPUC – Wales Rushing Abortions

Guidelines have been proposed by the Welsh assembly to ensure that women in Wales get faster access to abortions. Such women would be able to have an abortion within a week of asking. These proposals, which include removing the practice of having two doctors consent to an abortion, are supposed to reduce “negative psychological outcomes” associated with abortions. Dr Patricia Lohr, medical director of the British Pregnancy Advisory Service, said, “Being able to offer the earliest possible abortion treatment once a woman has made her decision means the procedure is less invasive for her, and it is cheaper for the NHS to provide.” Anthony Ozimic, political secretary of SPUC, said, “Easier access to abortion places women under psychological pressure to have abortions, leaving them even more vulnerable” [icWales, 27 August]

Trust and Truth

As I ponder the contents for FBC’s next Beacon magazine I keep coming back to trust and the obvious accompaniment, truth.

I have long known about relativism, the teaching that all truth is relative to a fixed point. So, in essence, there can be many ideas about truth each as valid as another. So, I could say that 2 + 2 = 4 and you could say 2 + 2= 5 and we could both be right in the world of relativism.

While I appreciate and concede that some understanding is influenced by our upbringing, culture etc., I must say that I believe truth is truth. If we disagree about something it must be that one of us is right and you are wrong :) (I am just joking, I trust God will always keep me teachable).

More recently I came across a philosophy prevalent in some church circles, and that is philosophical pluralism. It is very close to relativism, it ties in with post-modernism and several other man-made ideas.

What philosophical pluralism allows is for an individual to say “I believe Jesus is the only Way, Truth and Life” and then turn around and say, “I believe God can save people in many different ways.”

Can there be many truths or just one truth? In the Math equation above can we both be right? I do not believe so.

I believe the Bible teaches that truth is truth. If Christ said He is the only Way to the Father then I believe there is no other way.

No doubt I’ll be putting more on the blog about this in coming months but this is a start to get you thinking.
This article got me thinking about it this evening though: Google Health

Why are people so prepared to trust Google, even with their HEALTH, yet they will not trust the tried and tested Word of God? They accept truth that is offered by some anonymous website but not Christians in their lives or the Bible?

How Many Stars?

“He telleth the number of the stars; he calleth them all by their names.” – Psalm 147:4

“Lift up your eyes on high, and behold who hath created these things, that bringeth out their host by number: he calleth them all by names by the greatness of his might, for that he is strong in power; not one faileth.” – Isiah 40:26

Recently I explored a small part of the universe – via Google Earth. The new version of Google Earth allows you to search the stars much the same way you would explore New York City.

I had always read about how little of the universe we can see with the naked eye, but with Google Earth I had an opportunity to try it for myself.

If you were to sit outside at night and systematically count the stars you would see around 3000. With an average telescope that apparently increases to around 10,000.

What blows my mind is to look into the darkest part of the night sky and know that beyond that darkness you can find tens of thousands, if not hundreds of thousands of stars millions and billions of light years away.

We really have no idea how many stars are in God’s universe but it is an awesome number! Some estimates put the number of known stars at 10,000,000,000,000,000,000,000. That is ten billion trillion stars! Can your mind grasp that? I know mine cannot.

I cannot fathom where all the matter and energy that makes up the universe came from if not from a Creator God. Did all this come from nothing? If the quantity of the mass and energy in the universe does not blow your mind then what about the complexity?

Lastly, God not only made all of the stars, He also has a name for them all. If God has a name for all ten billion trillion stars, then knowing the names of a few billion here on earth is not that hard is it?

The Family of God

A couple of Sundays ago we considered what it meant to be in the family of God. We spoke about adoption, being a part of God’s whole family and especially being a part of a local church – our immediate family.

Yesterday in both services it was such a blessing to see the obvious love the church has for one another. In both services every one just seemed to enjoy seeing one another – this is exactly how it should be.

I would encourage any one to visit with us, you will receive a warm welcome. You will not be embarrassed or singled out, but you will be made welcome.

I thank God that my family and I are a part of such a loving and special local church.

Just a few decades ago some of the medical reasons given today for having an abortion would have been unthinkable and entirely unacceptable. Yet by many small steps we have come to the place where children are being murdered for the most minor of reasons. And at the end of the day, there is no good reason to kill a child.

One study concluded that “Of all eugenic abortions prescribed on the basis of genetic history, one-half to three-quarters of the unborn children destroyed are not affected by the disease. More “normal” children are killed than ‘handicapped’ children.” (Pro-life Answers for Pro-choice Questions, page 223)

Some argue that if a child is going to be born with a debilitating illness, deformity or disease then an abortion should take place. Some suggest it while others strongly recommend it.

But the argument that began by dealing with severe cases has taken us a step at a time to the place where we have the phrase “designer babies” becoming main stream.

There are abortions taking place today on children on the medical basis that they are found to have Down syndrome, missing limbs, an extra finger or cleft palate.

The mother of a five year old girl wrote into the London Times in 1990 with this comment:

“I was horrified to read that many couples now opt for abortion rather than risk having a baby with such a minor physical imperfection. My daughter is not some subnormal freak… she can, and does, lead a happy and fulfilled life… What sort of society do we live in when a minor facial deformity, correctable by surgery, is viewed as so abnormal as to merit abortion?”

Many unborn children diagnosed with Down syndrome never have the opportunity to enjoy life. To many in today’s society they do not deserve to live.

There is a recorded case in 1982 when a baby was born with a minor defect that would not allow food to pass into his stomach. This condition could have been easily fixed by surgery. However, because he had Down syndrome the doctor and parents agreed to allow him to starve to death. The public become aware of the situation and many families came forward offering to adopt him. But for some reason the parents preferred that their baby die.

That may sounds outrageous but a survey in the US revealed that two out of three doctors would go along with parent’s wishes to deny life saving surgery to a child with Down syndrome. Nearly three out of four said that if they had a Down syndrome child, they would choose to let him starve to death.

This reason is just one of many given for allowing babies to be killed or to die.

But the slippery slope begins with small steps and each small step leads to the horrors that we see today.

There is an historical precedent set by Hitler. No doubt killing Jewish people on the basis of their nationality would have at one point been abhorrent to the vast majority of those involved. But first Hitler killed 275,000 handicapped people.

What was once abhorrent became acceptable and before the nation knew what was happening 6 million Jews had been murdered.

Holocaust scholar Raul Hilberg argues that the key to the widespread destruction of the Jewish people was the use of degrading terminology such as “useless eaters” and “garbage” which blinded society to the fact the real people were being killed.

One pro-choice advocate referred to pregnancy as a venereal disease and abortion as the cure. Others have referred to unborn babies as debris, garbage, and refuse to justify abortion.

Once the person has been dehumanised then we can take any action against them we like with minimal repercussions.

“Abortionists in Massachusetts are reportedly responding to the Supreme Court’s partial birth abortion ban by injecting unborn babies with lethal drugs to prevent them being delivered live if an abortion is incomplete. The Boston Globe says three major hospitals affiliated to Harvard University have made such injections “standard operating procedure for abortions beginning at around 20 weeks’ gestation.” Phil Magnan, president of Biblical Family Advocates, said: “What should always give us pause is the fact that at one end of the hospital they are fighting to save a small 20 week [premature] baby from dying, offering them excellent life-saving procedures; and yet at the other end of the hospital they are giving children lethal doses of drugs to kill them in an attempt to shield themselves from botched abortions. Their actions are screaming medical hypocrisy.” [Boston Globe on CNA on EWTN, 13 August]“

Holiday Bible Club Day 1

Well today we kicked off our Holiday Bible Club 2007! It will run from today until Wednesday.

We started today with 10 children, four are first time visitors. We hope everyone enjoyed the morning and will return tomorrow.

Today we heard the story about Joshua the Soldier. Joshua was an ordinary guy that God used to extra-ordinary things. God wants to use each of us in that way.

Tomorrow we will hear about Joshua the Spy. Joshua stood when every one around him gave up and lost faith.

Plan on being with us tomorrow or simply pray for us while it continues.

Abortion – The Hidden Holocaust Part 6

                                                              i.      What about natural miscarriages

We will speak more about the sovereignty of God later on but we must make mention at this point. God controls life and death and a natural miscarriage is an entirely different scenario from a purposeful abortion.

Sometimes miscarriages do result from the carelessness of the mother but often they are entirely natural and unavoidable.

Like me you have probably seen signs, adverts and literature warning expecting mothers to not eat the wrong type of food, drink alcohol, smoke tobacco, take drugs or behave in such a way that would potentially harm the unborn child. These signs and the motive behind them are admirable and proper.

However, when we consider the implications this is the height of hypocrisy and ignorance.

In some US States and in some criminal cases here in the UK we find individuals being jailed or at the least counselled if they behave in a way that will harm the unborn child.

There is tremendous social pressure to condemn pregnant women who drink alcohol, take drugs or behave in a way that will harm the unborn child. The media recently condemned and verbally attacked a celebrity for partying all night even though she was some months pregnant.

The message is clear, do not harm your unborn baby, but it is okay to kill him.

                                                            ii.      The Sanctity of the Mother’s Life

Abortion not only kills the baby, in most instances (for cases do occur where the baby survives the attack), but it also harms the mother. There are a number of health problems to the mother associated with abortion but we will only take one of the most common. Let me stress, abortion is not the only cause of breast cancer. Like all cancers it occurs for a variety of reasons.

Breast Cancer

Breast cancer occurs for a number of reasons but one cause is abortion. Due to changes in the mother’s body during pregnancy, “a premature cessation of pregnancy (such as that caused by abortion) creates an unnatural condition. Consequently women who have first trimester abortions face twice the risk of contracting breast cancer as those who complete their pregnancies and give birth.” – Randy Alcorn

When testifying before the Reproductive Health Drugs Advisory Committee in the USA Dr. Brind said, “Only induced abortion – not spontaneous abortion – is consistently linked to the incidence of breast cancer.”

This does not occur in a natural miscarriage because the mother’s body instinctively releases a certain hormone which negates the health problem. However, this hormone is not released in deliberate abortions and so increases the possibility of breast cancer.

Contrary to popular teaching abortion does cause many health problems to the mother.

b.      Conclusions from the Sanctity of Life

                                                              i.      Any abortion at any stage is wrong

Whether the baby has taken on a human form or she is just in her earliest stages and measures less than an inch, she is still a human being and to take her life deliberately is to commit murder.

                                                            ii.      Current forms of IVF are wrong

In IVF and other reproductive assisting treatments a considerable number of embryos are destroyed. Some figures state that as many as 29 out of every 30 embryos die in the attempt to implant a single child. Normally three to six embryos are implanted in the hope that one will survive. The “surplus” are then frozen and kept for future use or in some cases scientific research.

In 1996 in the United Kingdom thirty-three hundred embryos were thawed out, destroyed in a saline solution, and incinerated as biological waste. Randy Alcorn shares that a medical magazine, Lancet, showed that 904 out of 1344 embryos were thawed because the couples involved did not request another five-year extension to their preservation. In other cases they were sold for medical research.

We do not have time to go into it today but there is a “black market industry… grown up around tissue and organs from aborted unborn children, donated to ‘help medical research,’ and then marketed for hundreds or thousands of dollars.” (Pro-life Answers to Pro-choice Questions, page 34)

One pathologist has stated that he wants to run his own abortion facility in Mexico so that he can get a greater supply of tissue from unborn babies. He has stated, “If you control the flow, it’s probably the equivalent of the invention of assembly line.” One individual commentating on this situation has made the observation that there is no doubt that we are seeing in our world today active trading in body parts. (Pro-life Answers to Pro-choice Questions, page 34)

Let me say that any human life is a wonderful thing and I am by no means wishing away the lives of those precious children brought about by IVF treatment.

However, I do not believe IVF treatment should be given unless there are means to deal with just a single embryo and there is a certainty or best possible chance of that single embryo surviving.                                                          iii.      Contraceptives should be carefully considered

The conclusion that life begins at birth should make us consider the contraceptives on the market today.

The drug should stop conception from taking place but many of the pills on the market stop the fertilised egg from implanting in the womb in the days that follow conception. This is essentially abortion at the earliest stage.

The morning after pill and many drugs do not prevent conception but they stop implantation in the womb and for that reason should not be used.

This is a huge topic on its own and should be studied carefully and deeply by all.

Conclusion: Scripturally and scientifically we have every reason to believe that life begins at conception. To end the pregnancy at any stage is, in most cases, straight forward murder.

The reason for the lack of new posts this week was due to the birth of our son. Samuel Martin Wickens was born on Tuesday 7th of August at 9:48pm. There were complications during his birth but by the grace of God he eventually arrived safely. He arrived weighing 8lbs 13oz.

During the complications I know everyone at the church was praying and I cannot tell you how much that means to us. We thank God for such a wonderful church family!

A Warm Welcome

We had good meetings yesterday and I thank the Lord. We were a little down in numbers with different ones away on holiday or with sickness, but regardless of numbers, I believe God blessed.

The singing was great, this is due in a big way to Derek, our song leader, being back with us. We hope he enjoyed his break but we are glad to have him back. I tried leading one song yesterday morning and anyone there will tell you it was not my finest hour! We sang, or I tried to sing at least, “Before the Throne”. It is a modern hymn with timeless truths.

We were glad to have a gentleman visit with us in the evening and want to welcome anyone to come and visit us some time.

b. Life in the Womb
i. Prenatal Development

As well as personal observations some notes collated from abort73.com and “Randy Alcorn’s “Pro-life Answers to Pro-choice Arguments”:

DAY ONE (fertilisation)
The combination of 23 chromosomes from the mother and 23 chromosomes of the father combine to create an entirely new and unique individual.

EIGHT DAYS (from fertilization)
At about eight days after conception, the fertilized ovum (called a blastocyst) implants in the lining of the uterus. It emits chemical substances which weaken the woman’s immune system within the uterus so that this tiny “foreign” body is not rejected by the woman’s body.

THREE WEEKS (from fertilization) 
By the third week of pregnancy (approximately 21 days after fertilization), the heart begins to beat, pumping blood throughout the body, and the brain begins dividing into three primary sections (forebrain, midbrain, and hindbrain). The baby’s blood type is different from his mother’s.

FOUR WEEKS (from fertilization)
Arms and legs begin taking shape at four weeks, and the embryo is now surrounded and protected by the amniotic sac.

FIVE WEEKS (from fertilization)
Permanent kidneys appear during the fifth week, and the external portions of the ear begin to differentiate. Hands and wrists are also beginning to take shape.

SIX WEEKS (from fertilization) 
By the sixth week, the brain emits waves which register on an EEG (electroencephalogram). This is the legal standard for determining if someone is alive after birth. The heartbeat can be heard with an ultrasonic stethoscope; the embryo responds reflexively to stimulus and may be able to feel pain. Bone ossification begins at this point as well. Remember what Job said in Job 10:11 – “Thou hast clothed me with skin and flesh, and hast fenced me with bones and sinews.”

SEVEN WEEKS (from fertilization)
Startle responses can be observed after 7 weeks, and female ovaries are now identifiable. Fingers and toes are now distinctly separated, and knee joints are present.

EIGHT WEEKS (from fertilization)
By the eighth week of pregnancy, every organ is present and in place. Ninety percent of the structures found in an adult human being can now be found in this tiny embryo which is only about an inch and a half long. The brain, at this point, makes up almost half of the embryo’s total body weight, and 75% of 8-week embryos demonstrate right-hand dominance. Intermittent breathing motions (though there is no air present in the uterus) occur, the kidneys begin producing urine, and male testes are releasing testosterone. As the skin thickens, it loses much of its transparency.

NINE WEEKS (from fertilization)
The eyelids close at this point, and foetuses are now capable of sucking their thumb, swallowing amniotic fluid, grasping objects and responding to touch. The uterus can be recognized in female foetuses and external genitalia become more recognizable.

TEN WEEKS (from fertilization)
Fingernails, toenails and unique fingerprints all appear. Twenty tiny teeth have begun to form in the gums.

TWELVE WEEKS (from fertilization)
Babies at this stage have Rapid Eye Movement (REM) sleep. REM indicates dreaming.

TWENTY-ONE WEEKS (from fertilization)
Viability generally begins at 21-weeks (barely 1/2 of full gestation) when a baby has a 15% chance of survival outside the womb.

ii. Abortion is Legal in all these stages

We must realise that the level of development does not determine life. Abortion at 20 days is just as terrible and wrong as abortion at 20 weeks. It has already been shown that life begins at conception but the fact that abortion occurs at later dates demonstrates the degradation of our society.

I want to ask the congregation a question. If a doctor is determining whether a body is dead or alive how does he reach his conclusion? To verify life or death the doctor will look for a heart beat and brainwaves. If he finds no heart beat he will conclude that the body is dead and if he finds no brainwaves he will conclude the body is brain dead also.

At three weeks the baby has a recognisable heartbeat and at six weeks there are recordable brainwaves. Every aborted child from this point forcefully has his heart and brainwaves stopped. Normally we would call that death and the process by which that death came, murder. To confuse the situation the pro-abortion crowd call it abortion and in this way remove the humanity from the baby and the crime from the process.

Though I use terms like abortion and termination we must interpret both as murder. When ever someone speaks of an embryo or foetus we must interpret them as saying baby. Embryo is used of any living creature at an early stage of development. Foetus is a Latin word that is translated as “Offspring, young one or little child”. A different stage of development does not give more reason to refer to the baby as more or less human. I am no less human at 26 than I will be at 36.

When someone refers to the baby in the womb as “it” we must interpret their meaning as “he” or “she”. Some will use the terminology “it” because the do not know the sex of the child, but many mean it as a de-humanising term to alleviate their conscious. After all, it is easier to say “I aborted it” rather than “I killed him” or “I had her killed”.

Waiting

Waiting. That has been the word for the week. Waiting. Our baby’s arrival is imminent and we are waiting. In some ways it is hard to get on with things because I know at any moment I may get the news that I need to drive quickly, yet safely, to the delivery suite. And even though I must ever be ready for the call, life goes on and things must still get done.Some Thessalonians had a similar attitude about the imminent return of Christ. They knew Christ could return at any moment and so they stopped working. They became lazy and consequently a bad testimony for Christ. (Read II Thessalonians 2 for more…) 

Every believer must be looking for the return of Jesus Christ. Yet as we wait, we must be working. Christ said the fields are white unto harvest and we must all be busy serving the Lord of the Harvest!

And by the way… we’re still waiting.

New Report on Human Tissue and Embryos Bill

British parliamentarians have produced a report on the government’s draft Human Tissue and Embryos Bill and SPUC is deeply concerned about it. If the committee has its way, wide areas of embryo research would be exempt from licensing and the regulatory authority would have unprecedented new power. The legislators on the group propose much more generous permission for inter-species embryo creation than is even in the draft bill, and they want broader grounds for creation of ’saviour sibling’ embryos as well as a weakening of the law against so-called reproductive cloning. Paul Tully, SPUC general secretary, said: “The report is good news for ethically insensitive researchers, would-be cloners and other maverick scientists. It is bad news for IVF embryos and for the idea that law should have an ethical framework.” [SPUC media release and longer critique, 1 August] The proposed law could mean that birth certificates would indicate the origins of people conceived with donor gametes. The 18 members of both parliamentary chambers heard nearly 50 witnesses and received more than 100 written submissions, including from SPUC [Guardian, 1 August] Two members of the committee have also expressed anxiety. Mr David Burrowes MP and Ms Geraldine Smith MP write: “We are very concerned that, by facilitating ‘hybrid’ experiments, the Bill will inevitably have the effect of further diverting money away from adult stem cell research – which has given rise to more than 70 successful patient therapies – to embryonic research, which has produced no therapies whatsoever.” The committee had lacked consensus. [letters, Daily Telegraph, 1 August] It has already been announced that the draft Bill will be introduced to Parliament during its next session later this year.

ii. Scientific EvidenceIn the scientific community we find an overwhelming consensus that life begins at conception. From individual doctors to scientific committees and medical textbooks the belief is the same.

Let us have a look at what they say:

“It is the penetration of the ovum by a spermatozoan and the resultant mingling of the nuclear material each brings to the union that constitutes the culmination of the process of fertilization and marks the initiation of the life of a new individual.” – Dr. Bradley M. Patten, Human Embryology

“A new individual is created when the elements of a potent sperm merge with those of a fertile ovum, or egg.” – Encyclopaedia Britannica

“…after fertilisation has taken place a new human has come into being… it is no longer a matter of taste or opinion… Each individual has a very neat beginning at conception.” – Dr. Jerome LeJeune, professor of genetics at the University of Descartes in Paris, discoverer of the chromosome pattern of Down syndrome.

“By all the criteria of modern molecular biology, life is present from the moment of conception.” – Professor Hymie Gordon, Mayo Clinic

“It is incorrect to say that biological data cannot be decisive… It is scientific to say that an individual human life begins at conception… Our laws, one function of which is to help preserve the lives of our people, should be based on accurate scientific data.” – Professor Micheline Matthews-Roth, Harvard University Medical School

“The beginning of a single human life is from a biological point of view a simple and straight forward matter – the beginning is conception. This straight forward biological fact should no be distorted to serve sociological, political or economic goals.” – Dr. Watson A. Bowes, University of Colorado Medical School.

“I have learned from my earliest medical education that human life begins at the time of conception… I submit that human life is present throughout this entire sequence from conception to adulthood and that any interruption at any point throughout this time constitutes a termination of human life…

I am no more prepared to say that these early stages [of development in the womb] represent an incomplete human being than I would be to say that the child prior to the dramatic effects of puberty… is not a human being. This is human life at every stage.” – Dr. Alfred M. Bongioanni, professor of paediatrics and obstetrics at the University of Pennsylvania.

“[The Zygote] results from the union of an oocyte and a sperm. A zygote is the beginning of a new human being. Human development begins at fertilization, the process during which a male gamete or sperm … unites with a female gamete or oocyte … to form a single cell called a zygote. This highly specialized, totipotent cell marks the beginning of each of us as a unique individual.” – The Developing Human: Clinically Oriented Embryology, 6th ed. Keith L. Moore, Ph.D. & T.V.N. Persaud, Md., (Philadelphia: W.B. Saunders Company, 1998), 2-18.

Before drawing any conclusions about the established Scriptural and Scientific fact that life begins at conception I want us to consider the life of the baby in the womb, its development and experience.

Abortion – The Hidden Holocaust Part 3

I. The Sanctity of Life
a. Life Begins at ConceptionI have no doubts that life begins at conception. Many Christians also agree with this belief. Sadly, some Christians disagree. I have always held this view but up until recently I have not had the scriptural and scientific support to back up my belief.

My case rested on a few Scriptures and the belief in the sanctity of life. My thoughts were that if we could not determine 100% when life begins then I believed we should give new life the benefit of the doubt. If we could not be 100% sure that life did not begin at conception then play safe and assume it does start at conception.

Many gave the so called “choice” of the mother the benefit of the doubt and condoned abortion up until a certain stage of development.

Could you imagine a small child coming to his mother, whose back is turned and cannot see her child, and asking the question, “Mum, can I kill this?” Do you think the mother would give the child the benefit of the doubt and reply, “Sure, go ahead and kill it”? Or do you think the mother would turn around and see what the child is talking about?

Though this scenario sounds ridiculous it happens every hour of every day all over the world. Doctors, nurses, mothers, fathers, grandparents, politicians and governments give the glib reply, “Sure, go ahead and kill it.”

My belief that life begins at conception is now based firmly on a multitude of Scriptures and scientific consensus.

My final point will bring us back to look in detail at the Scriptural support but I want us to begin with a few Scriptures that point to the fact that life begins at conception.

i. Scriptural Evidence

Job 10:8-12 Thine hands have made me and fashioned me together round about; yet thou dost destroy me. (9) Remember, I beseech thee, that thou hast made me as the clay; and wilt thou bring me into dust again? (10) Hast thou not poured me out as milk, and curdled me like cheese? (11) Thou hast clothed me with skin and flesh, and hast fenced me with bones and sinews. (12) Thou hast granted me life and favour, and thy visitation hath preserved my spirit.

Job says that God’s hands made him and fashioned him. The Hebrew word for “made” implies difficulty, carving something with care. It means that from the earliest stage God designed Job like an artist taking great pains to make sure his art results in exactly what he has in mind. The word “fashioned” is a continuation of this idea.

He describes being made from clay. Each time the potter took a lump of fresh clay it was with the intention of making something and God took each of us at the earliest stage with the intention of making someone.

The reference to being poured out like milk and curdled like cheese is difficult but perhaps accurate. The organs, skin and bones of a developing child in the womb are perhaps comparable. Initially the bones and skin are very fragile, the skin is translucent and the bones soft. But over a period of months both grow strong and hard.

Verse 10 may seem difficult but verse 11 leaves us with no doubts. Job speaks of God clothing him with skin and flesh and entwining or fencing him with bones and sinews. Interestingly, from what I have learned, this is the order of development in the baby. First the skin and flesh develop, then at week 6 the bones begin to harden.

Job concludes this passage by speaking of God granting life and favour and preserving his spirit. Job believed his life had been preserved throughout this time, continuing to his birth and subsequent existence outside the womb right up until this point.

Isaiah 44:2 Thus saith the LORD that made thee, and formed thee from the womb, which will help thee; Fear not, O Jacob, my servant; and thou, Jesurun, whom I have chosen.

Isaiah also gives us reason to believe that life begins inside the womb at the moment of conception, “…the LORD that made thee… formed thee from the womb…” The word formed means to mould into a form. Some modern translations say, “I am the LORD who created you; from the time you were born.” Do you see how this changes the text and weakens the Christian’s argument?

The correct translation is found in the Authorized Version and a number of other translations, “Formed thee from the womb” or “in the womb”. The formation of the child takes place not after birth, but in the womb.

Isaiah’s statement here lends weight to the belief that life begins at conception.

Psalm 139:13-16: For thou hast possessed my reins: thou hast covered me in my mother’s womb. (14) I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well. (15) My substance was not hid from thee, when I was made in secret, and curiously wrought in the lowest parts of the earth. (16) Thine eyes did see my substance, yet being unperfect; and in thy book all my members were written, which in continuance were fashioned, when as yet there was none of them.

We will take one more passage before we move on to the scientific evidence.

The Psalmist makes several significant statements. First of all he speaks about God covering him in his mother’s womb.

The psalmist describes God’s fashioning of the baby as his being “fearfully and wonderfully made.” The word fear speaks of the response of fearful reverence at the complexity of the human body. Even now scientists are left in awe at the design and structure of God’s creative work in the human body. The word “wonderfully” indicates that by our design we are separated, distinguished from the rest of Creation.

He says that his substance, his body, was not hid from God when he was made in secret. The word secret is significant and means “a cover (in a good or a bad, a literal or a figurative sense): covering, covert, hiding place, privily, protection, secret place).”
This word points to the fact that life begins beyond the scope of our natural vision, it occurs in secret, in a covered place, in other words, the womb! The inspired psalmist traces his life right back to the very first stages in the womb.

The phrase “curiously wrought” means to embroider, it refers to intricate needlework. Some have speculated that this may have reference to the graphic representation of DNA, that of a spiralling double-helix. The following phrase mentions all of our members being fore-known, like they were written in a book and God hand-selected each distinctive characteristic in each of us. He chose our eye colour, hair colour, height etc.

My personal position is that the relation to DNA from the phrase “curiously wrought” is stretching the text and meaning of the passage. While I would not rule it out completely I would not advocate it myself.

So what does this passage mean? It clearly means that God is involved in life at its earliest stage and we should consider life beginning from the moment of conception.

We will look at more Scriptures later on but these few passages are enough to show that life begins at the earliest stage, that of conception.

But what about the scientific community, what do doctors and scientists believe? Let us consider their words on the matter.

Why does abortion occur?

Medical Treatment to the Mother

Sometimes the unborn child dies as a secondary and unintended result of medical intervention to save the life of the Mother. These types of abortion have always been legal and to a degree morally acceptable. Some statistics indicate that less than 1% of abortions take place to save the life of the mother.

Rape or Incest

Often a woman will seek an abortion when she conceives a child due to rape or sexual abuse from a relative. Cases where this is the motive are very, very rare.

Though it is a terrible ordeal for the woman to go through it must be remembered that the conceived child has done no wrong and yet is being punished by being killed.

A key element to countering pro-abortion groups is to stick to the facts – abortion kills babies whatever the motivation may be.

Health of the Baby

In some cases tests reveal that a baby may be born with physical problems then some parents chose abortion. However, as we will see in our second point, The Slippery Slope, abortion as a solution to handicapped or deformed children is not a safe or moral basis for killing the child.

Unwanted Child

The vast majority of abortions take place because the child is simply not wanted. Maybe because of the shame of a teenage pregnancy, the threat of rejection by family, friends or society, or for many other reasons a person may choose abortion.

However, we come back to the fact that all abortions, for whatever reason, kill babies.

Abortion – The Hidden Holocaust Part 1

Introduction

Abortion is no more purely a medical problem just because the physician wields the curette than chemical warfare is purely a problem for pilots because they press the lever releasing the chemical. It is an issue we all must accept is a part of modern day life. It is an issue with a definite moral aspect.

How many children are aborted? Worldwide, 55 million unborn children are killed every year. Around the world, every day 150,685 children are killed by abortion; every hour, 6278; and every minute, 105. Those are the reported cases.

These are the figures for the USA: Let me break the abortions down to a national statistic: 1,600,000 babies are aborted in the United States every year. Per day, that’s 4,383; per hour, that’s 183; per minute, there are 3. 

How about closer to home, what is happening in the UK:

  • 25% of all pregnancies are aborted.
  • And 3% of those aborted are born alive
  • That’s 57,000 in the last 10 years
  • Abortion is legal in the UK up to the 24th Week – which is beyond viability
  • Abortions are legal later if the fetus is disabled

In 2004, for women resident in England and Wales:

·     the total number of abortions was 185,400

·     1,900 abortions (1%) were under ground E, risk that the child would be born handicapped

Northern Ireland:

  • In Northern Ireland in 2004 there were 22, 318 babies born
  • In the same year 1,280 were aborted (6%)

Introduction:

Why are we considering abortion today?

  1. To glorify God by defending the sanctity of life
  2. To highlight the tragedy and attempt to save lives
  3. To help those who may be considering abortion
  4. To show the truth and tackle the propaganda and lies of the pro-choice movement
  5. To help those who have had abortions 

 

  1. To glorify God by defending the sanctity of life

This evening we will consider more about the sanctity of life but we must start with the foundational truth of the sanctity of life. In all bioethical matters the sanctity of life serves as our premise. We cannot and must not approach the matter of abortion, euthanasia, DNA manipulation, cloning, organ transplant or any other biological or medical effect upon human beings without realising our origin.

God created everything and gave life to all living things. But we must realise that the life of the plant is different to that of the life of the pigeon and both are crucially different to the life of a human being.

God created us with a soul, spirit and body. He breathed life into us and gave us self-consciousness, a spiritual dimension and ultimately created us in His own image.

Many commentators have noted that in the violent death of any human, including babies in the womb, we see in a sense Satan attacking God. Satan cannot hurt God and so he attacks those created in God’s image.

God is the giver of life, but Satan is a murderer and the father of lies. As in all matters our prime goal is to glorify God and we do that today by defending and promoting the sanctity of our God given life. 

  1. To highlight the tragedy and attempt to save lives

I defy anyone to study the topic of abortion and not have their heart broken. In researching this topic I have read stories, seen pictures and viewed video that broke my heart, brought tears to my eyes, made me despair of this sin-sick world and provoked anger.

Though the images of a fully developed baby dying may strike a more prominent chord in our hearts any abortion at any stage is the wilful murder of an innocent child, our most vulnerable members of society.

What ought to be the safest place in the world for a baby, his mother’s womb, has become one of the most dangerous. One author noted that you are safer on the front lines in Iraq than you are in a mother’s womb in the United States.

If we as believers can grasp God’s truth on this issue then maybe by His grace we can impact those around us. 

  1. To help those who may be considering abortion

A recent survey in the US found that 64% of abortions involve the mother being coerced. (www.unfairchoice.info)  

It is beyond doubt that many more mothers would give birth to their children if they had the right information and the right support. Lives could be saved if the abused wife or girlfriend knew she had somewhere to turn if her partner abandoned her. Lives could be saved if the young teen knew she would have support and a place to live if her parent’s threw her out.

As a church we ought to condemn abortion but as a church we ought to support the needy and vulnerable.

  1. To help those who have had abortions

In any abortion there are always at least two victims and in some cases many more. The two constant victims are the baby who loses her life and the mother who knowingly destroys her own child.

Multitudes of women testify to the fact that after they have had an abortion they suffer physically, mentally and emotionally.

As Christians we can point them to Christ. In Christ they will find forgiveness and healing. Certainly a terrible action has been taken, but God’s grace is sufficient.

  1. To show the truth and tackle the propaganda and lies of the pro-choice movement

The pro-choice movement has put out numerous and persistent lies. Early in the pro-abortion movement they claimed many thousands of women died each year in botched illegal abortions. They claimed that legalising abortions would save lives. Years later the truth has been uncovered that the figures were grossly exaggerated. This lie is now being used in Mexico to try and bring about changes in the abortion laws there.

 We cannot go into this point in too much detail but there is a lot of false teaching about this matter around and we have a duty to get to the truth.

Pro-Life News from the SPUC

1. A British couple who were advised to abort their unborn child after doctors said he was severely disabled have had a baby who is not disabled. Heather O’Connor and Jamie Bramley were told by doctors at St Mary’s Hospital, Manchester, that their baby had brain defects. Mr Bramley said: “They said the scan was 99% reliable and recommended abortion. We were distraught. I asked for further investigations, but the doctor said he was rarely wrong.” The couple decided to go ahead with the pregnancy after seeking a second opinion at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital in Sheffield, where a professor said that he believed the child’s brain was normal. [Manchester Evening News, 23 July]

2. The number of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) is continuing to rise in Britain, according to the latest figures from the Health Protection Agency… …Overall there is a two percent rise in the diagnoses of STIs, with an especially high rate among young people and gay men. Professor Pat Troop, chief executive of the Health Protection Agency, said: “There is mixed news in these figures. Some infections now appear to be slowing down. But there is no room for complacency. The picture for young people remains particularly worrying.” [BBC, 20 July]

Is Your Name on the List?

This Sunday morning we will continue looking at reasons why a Christian can and should rejoice. In the evening service we have reached Ephesians 5:2-5. God wants us to walk in love. These few verses give us an idea what it means to walk in love.

Sunday morning’s message on rejoicing will focus on rejoicing in our salvation. The main text, Luke 10:20, speaks of the book of Life and this directs us to a wonderful theme that stretches from Exodus all the way through to Revelation. In a very real way, it strecthes from before the foundation of the world to eternity.

Many of us have a tendency to base our joy upon the wrong foundations. Many good things give us joy, but we must choose carefully the primary reason for our rejoicing.

When we choose or allow the wrong primary reason for our joy we inevitably choose the wrong foundation upon which we build much of our life.

The link between the wrong primary reason for joy and a wrong foundation in our lives is the fact that our lives often follow and focus upon that which gives us joy.

Make sure you are here Sunday as we look at the awesome Biblical truth of the Book of Life.

SPUC Newsletter

Beginning today I want to reproduce on our blog some of the information I receive from SPUC (Society for the Protection of Unborn Children – www.spuc.org.uk). The SPUC put out regular newsletters highlighting issues concerning abortion, euthanasia and other issues relating to medicinal ethics. The following information is from the 11th July:

The British government has confirmed that it supports population control in Africa. Speaking in the House of Lords, Baroness Royall of Blaisdon said: “The Government are committed to improving sexual and reproductive health, including family planning, across Africa. In 2006, [the Department for International Development] provided £25.1 million to [the United Nations Population Fund] and £7.5 million to the International Planned Parenthood Federation to support work on sexual and reproductive health and rights. We also work at country level and are funding reproductive health services in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, Sierra Leone and Zimbabwe, enabling women, men and adolescents to avoid unwanted pregnancy and HIV.” She also said: “We firmly believe that policy should be driven not by moral ideology, but by a firm evidence base,” adding that she meant this specifically in reference to issues such as abortion. [House of Lords Hansard, 9 July] Anthony Ozimic, SPUC political secretary, commented: “The British government’s renewed commitment to spreading the culture of death abroad makes all the more worrying Baroness Amos’ nomination to the post of European Union special representative to the African Union.”

A British doctor accused of acting inappropriately when he administered an overdose of a paralysing drug to two seriously ill babies has been cleared by a medical panel. A General Medical Council panel has rejected claims that Dr Michael Munro was guilty of professional misconduct when he administered a large dose of pancuronium to a premature baby in the moments before he died. Dr J Mitton, chairman of the panel, said: “There was a lack of clear specific professional guidelines and it is undisputed that your intention was to relieve suffering rather than to hasten death.” Dr Munro was, however, criticised by the panel for his inconsistent record taking. It emerged that Dr Munro had previously administered the drug to another premature baby in 2005 after having denied that he had ever used the drug before in similar circumstances. Dr Munro has rejected claims that this inconsistency impairs his fitness to practice. His case has caused further debate over the law and claims that guidelines for doctors are impossible to follow. Professor Sheila McLean, professor of medical ethics at Glasgow University, said: “We leave our clinicians in a very difficult position if we don’t clarify what we will approve and what we won’t approve in these cases.” [BBC, 10 July, and The Scotsman, 11 July]

Amnesty International has defended its stand on abortion following criticism by the US Conference of Catholic Bishops. Larry Cox, executive director of Amnesty International USA, told Rt Rev William S Skylstad, Bishop of Spokane, Washington state, and conference president, that the conference had “incorrectly asserted that AI has adopted a ‘pro-abortion stand’.” He claims, rather, that Amnesty “seeks to ensure that women and men can exercise their sexual and reproductive rights free from coercion, discrimination and violence.” Until April, Amnesty International’s official position on abortion had been neutral. A new series of decisions has treated abortion, in the cases of rape, incest or threat to the mother’s life, as a human right. Widney Brown, senior policy and campaigns director for Amnesty, said: “Where women have unwanted pregnancies as a result of sexual violence, including incest, they should have access to abortions and those abortions should be safe.”[LifeSite, 10 July]

Schools in Britain can now give abortifacient morning-after pills to girls as young as 11 without telling their parents. As part of the government campaign to reduce the number of teenage pregnancies, sexual health clinics which provide the pills and other means of birth control, are being set up in secondary schools. Norman Wells, the director of Family and Youth Concern, described the policy as “undermining the law on the age of consent.” Gill Frances, chairman of the Government’s independent advisory group on teenage pregnancy, said: “Of course we wish under 16s were not having sex at all, but if they are it is important that they are protected from sexually-transmitted diseases and having babies.” [Telegraph, 9 July]

A Northern Ireland high court judge has declined to intervene over the decision of a hospital to stop the artificial life support of a dying woman. When the patient’s daughter sought a judicial review over her mother’s treatment, Mr Justice Gillen said that there was no obligation under the Human Rights Act to provide treatment for the 51-year-old woman who last month was admitted to a Western Health and Social Trust with liver failure. Speaking to the woman’s family in the high court in Belfast, he said: “The sad truth is that this woman is going to continue to deteriorate and that her death will occur.” He stated that, “everything was being done to ensure her death was a dignified as possible”, but refused to grant leave for a judicial review of the way in which the woman had been treated by her doctors. Foreign Missionaries Kicked Out of China

CBNNews.com – More than 100 suspected foreign missionaries have been kicked out of China, a Christian aid group reports.

The China Aid Association says that the communist government campaign is trying to curb missions work before next summer’s Olympic Games in Beijing.

CAA says that the Chinese government launched a massive expulsion campaign of foreign Christians, encoded Typhoon No. 5, in February 2007.

Most of those expelled are citizens from the United States, South Korea, Singapore, Canada, Australia, and Israel.

According to an American who had been working in Xinjiang for 10 years and requested anonymity, more than 60 foreign religious workers have been expelled from Xinjiang alone.

Some of the workers had been serving the local people for 15-18 years before being asked to leave.

According to CAA’s private interviews with some of the expelled Americans, the Chinese Public Security Bureau, an internal security agency, confiscated their passports for a week, interrogated them, and prohibited them from having access to the U.S. Embassy in Beijing — a direct violation of U.S.-China consulate protection agreements.

Some will not be allowed to return to China for five years.

China bans evangelism, and often harasses, fines, and jails Christians who worship outside the official government church.

Still, some Christian missions groups say they plan to send thousands of volunteers to China next year.

About 350 years ago a shipload of travellers landed on the northeast coast of America. The first year they established a town site. The next year they elected a town government. The third year the town government planned to build a road five miles westward into the wilderness. In the fourth year the people tried to impeach their town government because they thought it was a waste of public funds to build a road five miles westward into a wilderness. Who needed to go there anyway? Here were people who had the vision to see three thousand miles across an ocean and overcome great obstacles to get there. But in just a few years they were not able to see even five miles out of town. They had lost their pioneering vision.
